Welcome to my guide for the new expansion of Final Fantasy XI, Betrayal of the Gilsellers. Altana the goddess of Vana'Diel has charged you with a sacred order, the order to destroy, maim, and generally do nasty things to all gilsellers in existence! Her red headed step children, the GMs, have ignored her pleas for now, so the responsibility relies in your hands. Ready to take the challenge? Let's go.

I - What is a gilseller?
In the world of Vana'Diel, people pay real life currency for gil made by others. This act is known as RMT (Real Money Trade), and the people who sell the gil are known as "gilsellers" "RMT" or "gillies". The people who sell the gil are either rich players who have a surplus and want to make money in real life, or groups often in China who work together as a team in warehouses or dormatories making gil. The latter of the two often heavily monopolizes NMs, uses hacks and bots to get said NMs, cause inflation on the server by monopolizing NM drops, and of course give people with real money, armor and weapons they have not earned in the game.
It is also the latter, which I will be discussing throughout this thread, simply because the former of the two could be your best friend, your linkshell leader, or that ugly galka who always humps you in his white lace subligar. They are tearing down the world we love so much, Altana's beautiful Vana'Diel, from the foundations up. It is our duty to stop them by any means nessecary.
II - How to spot a gilseller
There is a great deal of controversy over this issue. Just because someone is wearing crappy gear, is anon and without a link pearl, or is rank 1 and has a severely underlvled sub job does not nessecarily mean it is a gilseller. And someone having a name like Hgjks or Jysksuw doesn't mean so either. But Altana will not charge you points if you get that wrong. Chances are if someone is using nooby gear or has an underlvled sub job they don't know how to even call a GM, so go nuts! (Reminder: If a GM is called on you, it is because you have lost the expansion "Gilsellers Rising" not because of any advice I have given you in this post) As a general rule, here are the most obvious features, if someone you see commits 3 or more of these they are almost certainly a gilseller, but please remember there will be exceptions, so use discretion and care:
- Gilsellers usually travel in groups with other gilsellers, often in a train of /follow's. They sometimes party in alliances, and will train 1-5 mobs and use -ga elemental spells to defeat them all at once.
- They often wear the cheapest gear possible, and often mages wear little to no armor even at high levels
- Their titles almost always remain "Chocobo Trainer" while leveling, with the exception of Ninjas who will be "someone help me out here with Ninja job quest title". After attaining a higher level and starting to camp NMs their titles will commonly be:
Serket Breaker
Overlord Overthrower
Borokoa Bealegurer
Kirin Captivator
Breaker of the Chains (every RMT on Odin has now gotten sea and their CoP ring)
- They either wear no linkshell at all, or a commonly recognized RMT linkshell on your server, see your server forums for more information.
- Their names usually are very simple (EX: Flyboy Flyman Skyboyy Iceelvaanster Asuranfists Holyhealer Demonickiller) , or else have a quite obvious lack of vowels where needed, often it will look like someone just pressed a certain spot of a QWERTY keyboard. (EX: Hgjkgj, Tuyituy, Ccbnvc) Remember, hundreds of legitimate players will probably have names like these too, but when they display the other symptoms above as well, you can be sure.
- If you ask them if they are a gilseller or RMT and recieve no answer and they are not afk.
-If you do get a suspected gilseller and they use Chinese.
-Job combinations and party set ups. RMT almost always use Black Mage style mana burns to kill mobs, comprising mainly of BLM, with a tank and a healer thrown in usually. Some of the more basic party set ups will use a Thief, a Ninja or Paladin, along with another DD and a Red Mage or White Mage. It is rare to see jobs such as Dragoon, Dark Knight, Bard, Samurai, or Beastmaster as a gilseller, but probably not unheard of.
(P.S. If you want to be a smart ass and tell me how you've been in a mana burn and you aren't a gilseller then you didn't read this whole section. Go try again.)
Yeeeeeehaaaa! Lock n' load boys, it's open season on gilsellers!
III. - How to MPK a gilseller
Now for the fun part. RMT very commonly use manaburn type parties, consisting of mainly black mages. Their strategies usually include one puller bringing in 1-5 mobs and having the other Black Mages sleepga the mobs. They will then time the nukes at once and Sleepga again. Repeat until they all die. Here is what your options are for killing them.
- Cast the spell "Diaga" on the mobs. They will be unsleepable and mow down the weak armor of the Black Mages. It is preferred to "Poisonga" because it may be resisted, or last a short time.
- Bring in a train of higher level mobs and let their -ga spells hit them. For instance when the RMT are using the Soldier Crawler camp in Crawler's Nest, aggro a single Damselfly and link it to all the other in the area. Bring them all to the gilseller's camp and be sure to wait for the gilsellers to hit them and then cast Diaga on the mobs, so they can not be slept just after.
Now, of course there are other types of parties besides manaburn parties that gilseller use. What do you do for them?
- The "I am your friend" Sneak Attack technique!
Find a group of gilsellers and start to PL them. Do this for 1-3 mobs, until they have grown comfortable with you being there. Make sure if they send you any tells you reassure them you are there to help, often saying ">Insert Notable Gilseller Name Here< send me to help you" works. I have also told gilsellers "I work for >Insert Gilselling Website Here< too." After they are sure you will help them, they will start to overcamp, often bringing in more than one mob, or a mob too strong for their group. You have two choices
a) Just let them die and pretend you were afk so you can do it again
b) Cast a DoT on the links as nessecary
*More ways of MPKing gilseller will be added to this section soon*
IV. - How to stop a gilseller's exp
If you are a pacifist and wish no harm to come to gilsellers, there is still an option for you! You can stop a gilseller group from gaining exp from a variety of different tricks.
- Pull hate on the mob they are killing and let it hit your Spikes spell. They will get no exp if your Spikes do any damage to the mob. Cure IVing the injured gilsellers is an easy way to gain hate. If you need to sub WHM to cure the gilsellers, try using equipment that comes with Spike effects on them.
- Kill all of the mobs in the area. Very easy in most camps, just make sure not to screw over any other exp parties in the area. Only do this if you do a /search of the area and they are the only party in the range that could exp there.
V. - What to tell GM's
Here's where the evil step childern of Altana I told you about come in. Some times when you kill a gilseller, it has a chance of dropping a GM call. When you recieve this item, a GM will begin talking to you. You must do every thing in your power to trick him, because according to him MPK is illegal, even on a gilseller. Here are a few simple tricks for fooling these half sympathetic, half wanting-to-bust-your-ass-for-MPK, mobs.
- If you cast dia on their slept mobs say you were trying to claim a mob and you didn't know they had slept it. *Works every time*
- If you kill all the mobs in the area, have your fellowship NPC out and tell the GM you were lvling it.
- If you "go away" and stop curing them and they all die then only they are to blame, a GM can not be brought into the matter.
- If you train mobs so they cast AoE on it, say you were fighting one and more linked! Then you had to zone and the BLMs foolishly attacked it, again, their fault.
- If you pull hate and they hit your spikes spell, you can tell the GM that they can use "/blockaid" if they didn't wish to recieve your help.
VI - Dynamis and sky tricks!
Gilsellers have ventured into sky and dynamis more and more in the last 6 months on my server, and likewise on other servers. Although they go into Al'Taieu (sea) and Riverne Site #B01 with 30+ people as well, the actions they do in Dynamis and Sky are far more severe.
Sky
-When camping Despot, gilsellers are usually at most risk. Often they will train 3-8 Groundskeepers at a time, and sleep them, and proceed to nuke. This is a perfect chance to use the Diaga technique. Hilarity ensues as they topple like dominos. It is best when they all Home Point of course.
-At Kirin, they may lose claim for a few seconds as the Black Mages run from his awesome power. A Provoke and Call for Help is the perfect remedy to the prospect of them getting a Kirin's Osode to drop.
-At Mother Globe they bring her in and cast Thundaga 3 until she dies. Even as hate bounces around many die, but that doesnt mean you can't kill more. Aggro a few Defenders and bring them in for the -ga spells to hit the Aura Guards they pop. This is especially beautiful when they all wipe twice.
-For Faust, I have never seen them fight. Any information on this would be useful. I know if it was my LS fighting Faust, I would be a Paladin cast cure on the tank, and use Invincible to bring him to all the Mages. Then when the AoE kills them all I would take the portal up to Ulli camp. Do they use a similar style?
-At Ulli, it is qutie difficult because they are quite efficient at only fighting one at a time. Even so every now and then a stray Aura Statue may aggro giving you the perfect chance to Diaga. Make sure they have hate on it first, or you will just be stuck with an Aura Statue chasing you that you can't sleep.
Dynamis
Here is the fun one. When RMT do dynamis one of the gilsellers will be trading timeless hourglasses to the others. You will know which one it is because they will be using the item "Perptual Hourglass" over and over to make copies. Spam the trade button on this person and they will often not notice you are one of his companions. If he does indeed give you an hourglass, enter the dynamis and proceed to lot on as many drops as you can. Diaga at will too, if they try to out lot you. It is particularly fun to invite all your friends after that, and maybe you will even get relic armor!
VII - General tips
Not much here yet, but I can say one thing that comes to mind now.
- As far as I know, casting tractor on a gilseller after being raised will cancel the raise. You must be quick and do it before they get up. It also cancels reraise I believe, so try to cast it on the White Mages as soon as they die. (Can anyone confirm this? I remember someone tractoring me while I was afk and the raise was gone from before)
VIII - Suggestions welcome!
This is a growing guide and I will try to update it with new information or ideas as I can, so PM me or post below with your own ways of MPKing gilsellers! Any flaws, misinformation, or updates you'd like to make should also be posted or PMed to me. Formating suggestions for the guide also welcome, I'm new to this stuff. :p This guide is still very incomplete right now.
IX - Congratulations!
After completing all of these steps you will be well on your way to completing the expansion pack "Final Fantasy XI: Betrayal of the Gilsellers". Remember, we all have the power to shape our paths, and the power to bring about right in our worlds. Do not forget this, and the gilseller menace will eventually be destroyed.
Author's note: I wrote this guide to be partly silly, and partly serious. I am serious about everyone trying to MPK gilsellers at all costs, and I do it as frequently as I can on Odin server. I am also serious about updating this to spread knowledge on how to stop them. It may appear silly at some parts, but believe me, I want them gone. You are at risk of a GM call for any of these actions you take, but after killing hundreds upon hundreds of RMT I can say I have never had a GM called on me. I am not saying there is a 100% chance they will not call a GM on you, but chances are the GM would be on your side anyway. Still, remember to use at your own risk.
I take no credit for this, but it is slightly amusing.
