Just curious..
What was everyone's first Final Fantasy they played and when and how did you find out about it if you can remember?
Final Fantasy II SNES (IVj), 1991 an elementary school friend named Abe came over with the game and I tried it out

First Final Fantasy I played was FF1 for NES. I rented it from a local mom and pop video store when I was a kid. I hated it. And then I played some Megaman.

also gonna post the order i liked ff's just for fun:

XI - best battles that make use of enfeebles and enhances, most content
IV - memorable locations and character interactions
VI - large character selection, 2 worlds
T - best job system
VII - huge game with decent storyline
V - good job system with mediocre storyline
IX - nice backgrounds and fun battles
IIIj - good job system, avatars, poor graphics and user interface
I - fun, bonus points for being the beginning of an empire
X - wakka and that stupid ball sport gave me a headache, great graphics
II - irritating exp system
VIII - random battle, summon your avatar, win, repeat, magic draw = ugh, ugly locations (other than first island)

i still voted for snes era though

I. It's okay now that I'm older and have the patience for that sort of game, but when I was a kid, as I said in a previous post.. I hated it.

II. I really liked the leveling system it had. I've always thought that if I used a sword more than something else, that I'd be better with a sword than anything else. Or if I got hit, the character would learn how to take a hit better. I thought that was damn cool. I just like it for how unique it was in the FF canon.

III. I've only played a roughly translated ROM, so I can't say.

IV. First FF on the SNES and the one that got me into RPGs, big time. I loved the Kain and Cecil rivalry, and the dark knight stuff. Thought the transformation of Cecil from Dark Knight to Paladin was badass, even though you never got to use that wave sword move thing in the American version that doppelganger Cecil uses when you fight him. ;/ This FF is the one that holds the highest nostalgia value for me.

V. I wasn't a fan, I just got bored after awhile. The ton of customization was cool though.

VI. Best story, best characters, best atmosphere. I loved the dual worlds and how the game completely changes perspective halfway through. I have to say that in my opinion, it's the best FF out there.

VII. Really badass story, nice cast, good gameplay and the cutscenes were freakin' sweet. It has alot of hype and I don't really think it deserves all of it.. I'm just glad I beat it before the entire world was creaming their pants over the first RPG they've ever played. I like it for making RPGs cool. Haha.

(Tactics). Loved it. I was a HUGE fan of the Tactics Ogre series, Shining Force games and having Square make a strategy game was really nice. Alot of other strategy games popped up after this was made that I really enjoyed too. Made the sub-genre a little more popular. Was good times.

VIII. Lame.

IX. Meh.

X. Bleh.

X-2. Barf.

XI. Save me.

my opinion is that ff2j and ff tactics both suffered from the fact that you needed to prolong battles all the while letting the enemy whack the shit out of you to gain exp, just didnt seem fun to me.

i selected snes era... while i think that VII, VIII, and X all were awesome in their own way... nothing will compete with FFII and FFIII (as released here in NA i believe these are IV and VII in JP) these were the games that solidified my love for the ff series and has kept me loyally coming back to each new game that gets released with the final fantasy namesake

II.... long hard... one of the first RPG ever played, the most similar to DQ of all FF...

III... don't remmeber much about it

IV <3 it, finished in a week

VI first eng ver FF played, in my opinion best of all series, showed great improvement, and such difference with other game of the time

VII good story (but less so character), fresh battle system give alot more control over character... but lvl stone can be very tedious

V went back and played V, did not leave too much impression, but i remember boss fight being brutal

VIII played most of all of FF, more than 10 time through (the last time being ridiculously constricted play... no winning random fight, no xp for GF, no lvl for char, no enter non-pet store, no magic from card and card syn item, no junction magic on hp so greatest hp can get is about 1600, all GF obtained... bahamut seems scracy with 1600 hp... believe me... i spent about 4 month on that being have to do every boss fight 5-10 time to win it) now, i get alot FFVIII bashing... i know some of them are kinda cheesy and needs improvement. but to be honest, how many of you can actually say FFVIII being worthless, or even bad, without hear about it from 20 ppl? i really liked music, graphic, character (handsome main character tends to have it's way with female gamers), and junction/battle system (which can be very easy i.e. summon gf and win to very hard i.e. above mentioned the sickening restriction, fit player of different lvl in skill and commitment). storyline does seem weak, and card play a too big of a role in the game. but over all, i'd say it rank #3, #4 on of all FF.

IX only played it once, and very roughly at that, so can't say much, but my biggest impression is from music.

XII the most fun part is pass starting stage (takes quite a while to get into it) and can dream about being godly (which usually turn out to be big disappointment at 60+, then 70+) very time consuming...

PS... out of all Square game, favorate are CT, FF6 and Xenogears (aka FFVII Twin)

PSS... just picking on rein cus well... the "blah... meh... " are hardly considered reason to dispise a game... and as i said, i only touched IX, and never played X, X2, XI, so can't say much about those, also, FFVIII afterall is one of the best selling game... like ever, so it must did "something" right

I voted SNES, although I really think the introduction of 3D helped tell the story much better.

Voted for the SNES era. Thought I'd talk about each of the games as some others did as well.

I. I never played I and II until they were released on the PS1. Even tho the storyline is very simple, it's still a fun game.

II. Loved the characters in this one, especially Leon. First FF to have pre-made characters and focus the storyline on them.

III. Tried to play a ROM of this and couldn't deal with the nes graphics again, so nothing to say about it.

IV. First FF and RPG I'd ever played. Like Rein I loved the Kain and Cecil rivalry and the concept of Dragoons. My favorite storyline in the series and is my favorite of all the FF games.

V. Story was mediocre, but the job system was alot of fun.

VI. I liked IV better mostly cause it was my first, but this is by far the best in the series. Amazing storyline, memorable characters, best bad guy ever.

VII. Great game, I never liked it as much as most people but overall another amazing title in the series.

(Tactics). This one was amazing. I loved the job system in the game and how much custimazation you could put into it. But like IX, the ending was weak.

VIII. Decent.

IX. I liked this one for the most part until the end...where it's like the writers couldn't think of anything else and just threw some crap together.

X. Great graphics, decent storyline.

X-2. Pretty retarded imo.

XI. What Rein said.

I agree with that. I thought the story was great. And for some reason, the music really caught me in that game too. I played it when I was so young I think the boss music is engrained in my mind cause it pops into my head all the time.

1) 7-9: My favorite era because it has FF8 and Tactics. I just ignore FF9.
2) 4-6: These were good games, I especially like the very underrated FF5. I guess this era gets the 2nd place for me.
3) 10-X2: 10 was really dissapointing. X-2 was utter shite, I'm still amazed I managed to bring myself to playing it till the last dungeon, never finished it though.
4) 11: I don't advice anyone to try this one out.

I'm leaving 1-3 out due to my lack of knowledge of these games.

What about Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest for GB? I like that one better than the Legend ones.

FFVIII and FFX-2 seem like Square's attempts to appeal to more girl gamers.

oh and SNES FF's rule all.

FFI- 3rd RPG I ever played behind Ultima III and Dragon Warrior. Good game just not the best.
FFII - played ROM.. its ok not the best... SE makes names for characters omg.
FFIII - played ROM... pretty cool not that memorable
FFIV - favorite FF of all time.. just remember the game more for some reason
FFV - have it on ROM... haven't played it much
FFVI - awesome gotta love Kefka
FFVII - great game just not that great summons were cool but feel overpowered
FFVIII - Squall is a lame mofo, card games are lame as fuck as well
FF tactics - strategy games are cool, had some fun with this
FFIX - amusing but got boring too fast
FFX - some cool stuff and I actually liked sphere grid and monster arena.. blitzball was lame though
FFX-2 - played a little of it, but never bought it.. not really impressed, but combat was interesting.
FFXI - The fact that my family wants me to seek counseling based on how much I play this should tell you something.

My first FF was NES when it first came out, I liked it but few year later FF2 came out for SNES now that one kickass which I like the battle settings. Sadly you cant pick your own party :( but it rocks still.

I played all of FF games even japan verson as well. now those gameboy well legends 1 and 2 they were ok but didnt like replacing weapons when they break. meaning at 0 then weapon is useless.

There was another one call FF aventurs which this was action like zelda like playing it was ok also. edit: this was also gameboy too.

Blitzball was fun, yeah...but seriously, why does IX get no love? The script was the most well written (or at least best translated) in the series, the story was lighthearted and competent (okay, MAYBE minus the end boss), the battle system was classic old school, and the art design was some of the most beautiful ever conceived in a video game. Oh well...me and my quirks, eh?

Still hate VIII.
