This is the reason youll never catch me using a program like this or any botting program.

Ouch. I use my parser very sparingly, and also it's impossible to keylog my entry into FFXI.

But there...WAS a case of someone accusing the windower of having a keylogger in it. It was dispelled quickly by a lot of people testing it, etc.

This sucks though lol. I think I'll stick to my very old version of the parser from now on.

Well the Parser itself is completely valid. Someone posted a "link" to this "parser", which wasnt the parser at all. Someone basically used the popularity of the parser to lure people into downloading a trojan. It basically follows the principle of seeing a 50KB file called Doom3_Fullversion.ZIP.EXE...

My only concern about this story, is that he claims to have never executed the downloaded file.

A file can be infected by a currently running process (which is a virus) just by when the file system checks the file to load its Icon, or whatever. But a new exe-based virus can NOT infect a machin until it is executed. This means:

1) He *did* execute it. Even if only to look at the installer and then cancel it.
2) The virus was spread onto his machine through other means. This is bad, because it means that perhaps the website that was linked to contains an ActiveX control, or some other malicious script.

In which case, I suggest everyone checks thier machine for sucpicious activity. The best way, is to open Task-Manager and look for any rnning processes which you cannot identify, specifically those that are running as the current;y logged-in user. Yes, this means learning which programs on your list are system/microsoft based.

And if you dont know what something is, throw its name into google. If you still dont know what it is, quit it. If something like your printer drivers or whatever suddenly quit, then you know what it was. If you still have no idea what you just quit, I strongly suggest you edit your registry and remove the files you cant identify from the "/Run" sections.

The machine I play FFXI on, is NEVER used to access the internet except for FFXI itself, and the computer has no shared drives at all except the admin$ shares, which of course need remote-admin (passworded) access.

With all the virus scanners, and all the firewalls, and the ad-detecting programs in the world. There is NO better protection than looking after your machine yourself, imo.

Personal Rule of Thumb: If you see more than 1 of any process running, Google search it. Explorer, etc. can multi-run...but some viruses do as well.

Poor guy. I wasn't tempted to use any 3rd party program. Now, this confirms me I was dam right not to do it. Sad thing is there is absolutly nothing to do for him. GM won't help, and they are right not to do it.

O_o WTF the GM kicked him out of the chat.... gay ..... but now that i think of it the GM's on ifrit arn't that bad.. i've met about 3 GM's who actually gave me ingame hints ect ect ect. but still... ; ;

That sucks IRL :(

Great little program he wrote too, and what does he get back from the FFXI community for his trouble? His account hacked.

And btw, dont lump log parsers into the "evil 3rd party program" category. They do nothing to alter the game. They dont even run on the same computer as FFXI (least it didn't back when I tried it).

Just reads simple text files on your HD created by FFXI and converts it into useful information ;P

Yeah...the parser has very little to do with FFXI itself.

Now, someone took his work and distributed viruses under his name. Sounds like lawsuit material to me.

What exactly does a parser do?

Author:  Pix [ Mon Aug 09, 2004 8:58 pm ]
Post subject:

It records your damage and other things you do in FFXI, straight form the logs. Then you can compare your DOT to other people in your party and whatnot.

Ok this has nothing whatever to do with Parser's. But figured I have nothing to lose by asking in here. I have a router at home (cabel connection). To this router we have 2 comps hooked up (daughter's and mine). When I am the only comp connected to the router - everything works fine (no dc, no internet loss). As soon as I connect my daughter to the router within 1 or 2 times of connecting to the internet - we both lose connection. If I'm on FFXI at the time that she loses connection -- I can continue to play until either I dc or logout -- and which time I then can't connect without a reboot and disconnecting her). Yeah friggin weird. I started with Linksys (read on forums that they have alot of problems) and switched to Netgear. I have called their support/cable company support and worked on this now for over 2 weeks. Not getting anywhere. Anyone having suggestions/advice on what to do - I'd greatly appreciate it. Not fun playing with the whine in the background "How come u get to play, but I can't talk with my AIM friends -- It's just not FAIR! - waaaagh"

Kailyn can probably answer this question for you. I remember we had similar problem long time ago. It's basically I only get connection when his computer is on. We used netgear at the time too. He had to do some configuration change to fix the problem. If he didn't reply to this post, find him in game and ask him, he won't bite, I promise. :)

Thanx - I'll do that. I hope he doesn't bite and has lots of patience. I try to use things like this as learning experience and tend to ask alot of dumbo questions

Yeah, i can relate..

I tried to use a router along time ago, and neither computer would maintain internet connection. I finally made the company come install it, lol.

Cyntari there was a patch recently out for various versions of windows its not a critial patch but can cause disruption on home networks, it plays around with packets and how they are treated by the router, if one of the computer has this patch on then it could b eruining the network, id hate to recommend reinstalling all computers on your network but i hear that the easiest way to fix it unless ms now has repatched to fix this, supid ms thats why i never get anything other than critical patches or ones that have been out a while and people say work fine, if i was back home id check more info about this but it could be the problem.

Otherwise try using a manual config on your network rather than a DCHP setup which im gussing your using, cause DCHP might not be working right.

Networking can seem so simple but silly things get missed, if you could give me some screenshots (PMd) showing your network config into, from the router side and each pcs ip settings that can help.

Properties of the TCP/IP or a screen of the command /ipconfig in DOS should be all i need to help more, but im a hands on person in general i play with various things till they work then tweak around more to improve it.

PS you looking forward to this hurricane coming :? cant beleive im on holiday and gonna be sitting through a cat1/2 hurricane during the next few days heh

That werid I am using a Router wireless linksys model WRT54g both computer and PS2 is on the hard line right now. And they both work just fine and even if I DL on the PC and play, still works never got DC.

I did had the ps2 on the game Adapter wireless work good until I ran in to plm that its will take too damn long to get log in and getting DC so I been playing with it, But give up and went to hard line so I dont get DC anymore.

Any how I have my dad comes here and he use his laptop to do wireless and works fine with no plm on ps2 and pc thats on the hard line. :)

Peejo and Kailyn u have my everlasting thanx. I managed to get in touch with Kailyn while he was on FF and he even logged from the game to help me. Took alot of time going back and forth on MSN narrowing down the problem, and so far (knock on wood) things seems to be working fine.

Thanx again guys -- I really appreciate all you both did to help me :D
