Appraisers(04/10/2006)

http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/topics/060410.html

Some people in Vana'diel make their living as appraisers, helping merchants and mercenaries determine the type of items they have picked up during their travels in Aht Urhgan. The Near East's powerful ocean winds, rust, or even mere age can make an item unrecognizable to the amateur eye. The finder may even simply lack the knowledge to make an accurate judgment and find himself unsure of how to use the newly discovered good. In such cases, appraisers use their experience and keen senses to ascertain what the item really is. Qiqirn can use their keen noses to sniff out information about an item, and many make excellent appraisers. The only drawback to using a Qiqirn appraiser is that they might be a little difficult to understand due to their odd accents...

Appraisers

Does the idea of finding a mysterious item on your adventures sound exciting?

For example, let’s say you find a “??? sword.”

It may look just like an ordinary sword, but it could turn out to be an incredibly powerful relic. On the other hand, what looks to be a keen blade to the untrained eye may end up disappointing its finder. So what is the sword’s true identity? Could it be a legendary item? There is only one way to find out--by visiting an appraiser in town. The development team has decided to implement this feature in order to add an increased element of anticipation to adventuring in Aht Urhgan.

The mysterious items do not stop at swords. There are “??? gloves,” “??? rings,” and many other varieties. However, you will be unable to equip these items after finding them.

That is where the appraisers come in. By getting your mysterious items appraised, you will learn their true identities, and they will henceforth become usable. This service will require a payment in gil, but will not be very expensive.

If you get an item appraised while in a party, the appraised item will be added to the treasure pool. This is so that the treasure can be distributed among party members, even it is an Ex item. If you are playing solo, the appraised item will be added directly to your inventory. If you do not have enough inventory space, you may be unable to receive the appraised item, so be sure to clear out your bag beforehand.

So if you find an unknown item while adventuring in a party, you can travel to town and have the item appraised together before disbanding. Perhaps the item you have been holding will turn out to be a fantastic find, and then you can all celebrate together!

Appraisers and mysterious items will be available with the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion disc!

This reminds me of D2 and using a scroll to figure out what the Rare, Common and Unique items were that dropped.

This reminds me of Phantasy Star Online, You find items in blue text labeled, just as Yarr put it, "???? Saber" or whatever.

You gotta go back into town, find a "Tekker" and have them determine what the item is. perhaps a "Drain Saber" or whatever. However, depending on the skill level of the Tekker, and how much money you are willing to spend, he may give an innacurate appraisal, and the sword will have a different effect from what he told you.

It's pretty much the same thing.

lol.. In Dungeons and Dragons you had to get items identified before they were even useful or you wouldn't know anything about them. All those games copied D&D, sorry to burst your bubble. It is the father of all RPGs.

This should be common knowledge by now.

Diablo 2 was awesome lol. I loved it.

It might have had to do with the fact that I just played exclusivly with people I worked with. We use to play it as much as I played FFXI. We even setup VoiceChat way back in the day using BattleCom (pretty awesome program for those who can remember it. It was bought out by MS and murdered)

I think if I had just picked it up and played it with out knowing anyone I probably wouldnt have had as much fun.

My DM never made us get things checked in D&D so I never heard of that before.

Yeah your DM didn't go by the rules haha. Identify was actually a spell in the game lol.

Supposed to do that really, but whatever. Diabolo 1 and 2 both sucked on Bnet really. Tons of jackasses and the game was nothing but dupers. The single player game itself sucked, and that is why the game really had no leg to stand on imo... just a really overrated game series.

Diablo 1 sucked, I'll let you say that, but Diablo II is one of the best games I've played, especially in the genre.

Though the characters looked the same and you couldn't change that, the skills made the character how you wanted. The story was pretty good, but since you replayed it on each difficulty, it became a collect everything get level 99 game.

I used to play this over a network with a few friends, and it was fun because you didn't have PvP jackasses or rules to worry about, and we all worked together since we didn't gain anything from being greedy.

I almost derailed the thread here, you can thank me later.

Also there was a job trait to certain people that could automatically recognize or identify weapons and armor and such and use them right off
in D&D

Always had someone in the party who had the actual spell.. well the couple times I actually played pen and paper DnD. Yeah you can buy scrolls and get others to identify.. the point is DnD made you have to go through that bullshit first. I do mean bullshit by having you not be able to use a weapon until you get it looked at.

Brings back memories...I remember having a heart attack everytime a red box was dropped. Loved that game.

Was the Lion cloth a new item after I quit?

I don't quite understand this. Does an item take up more space once it's appraised? Or maybe it's a key item until identified?

I'm sorry, but preteen is usually designated for the ages 9 to 12, and if I were a preteen I would be breaking the terms of service every time I logged on. Oh well.

P.S. I didn't spy on anyone.
