I highly doubt this comes as a shock to anyone. I thought the idea was retarded from the start.

Makes me wonder how eager these studios are going to be to make Blueray media.

http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArtic ... IADISC.xml

Code:
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Exactly a year after it was launched in the United States, the Sony PlayStation Portable's days as a hand-held movie-viewing device might be numbered.

Disappointing sales have slowed the flow of movies on the proprietary Universal Media Disc to a mere trickle. At least two major studios have completely stopped releasing movies on UMD, while others are either toying with the idea or drastically cutting back.

And retailers also are cutting the amount of shelf space they've been devoting to UMD movies, amid talk that Wal-Mart is about to dump the category entirely.

Wal-Mart representative Jolanda Stewart declined comment on reports that the retailer is getting out of the UMD business. But studio sources say such a move is imminent, and a check Wednesday of a Wal-Mart store in Santa Ana, Calif., revealed a drastic shrinkage of UMD inventory. Several shelves of movies in the PSP section were gone; all that remained were seven UMD titles sitting bookshelf-style on the top of the PSP section, with no prices or other information.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has completely stopped producing UMD movies, according to executives who asked not to be identified by name. Said one high-ranking exec: "It's awful. Sales are near zilch. It's another Sony bomb -- like Blu-ray."

Blu-ray isn't even finished yet, how can it have bombed?

As for UMDs, they actually sell TV series and anime episodes like hotcakes. But when it comes to a full theatrical movie, why watch it on a tiny screen (even if it is beautfully sharp) when you have a 42" Widescreen HDTV at home? Not to mention UMDs never have any special features.

I didnt say blueray bombed, I said UMD bombed and that this isnt going to help support for blueray.

A lot of high up movie studio executives are pretty pissed about it.

Its simple. UMD discs for movies cost too much. If you want a mini version of a movie. Wouldn't it make sense to make a it a mini price.

Not you Yarr; the end of the article says Bluray bombed.

I have Spiderman 2 on UMD. It was free, so that was a pretty good price, lol.

Yeah that and you can only watch UMDs on PSP.. which sucks lol. No fucking clue why anyone would buy any movie on UMD when they can get it on DVD. Hell my Ipod has Advent Children on it right now lol. Take that PSP.

They would be smarter if they went the iPod why and had a site dedicated to allow tv/movies downloads as this is the current trend. This will reduce the cost but hugely promote the system itself.

too bad the only storage medium for it is flash cards... which gets pretty damn expensive after a while compared to a ipod with 30 gigs being 300 bucks haha

sony is considering adding a flash drive inside the system.

Something around the likes of 4 to 8 gigs of flash memory. If that was done. Umm yea you get what i mean

yea anus but when you think about it. 4 gigs costs about 150-175. From what i hear they plan to add it in 2007. By next year it should cost even less.
So factoring that in, and considering that for now they sell the psp giga pack for 299. Its very very possible

giga pack meaning... they give you the systems all the stuff in the value pack and a 1 gig memory stick

Yeah I know, pretty sure that is what Aalan has. Just not that impressed with PSP lol. I have a GBA and an Ipod. I could give a rat's ass about PSP so far. DS looks like it might be cool though. There should be some decent games out for PSP eventually.

Yeah the Syphon Filter looked kinda cool. You didn't get any extended warranty on your Ipod I guess. I got 2 years on top of the one year manufacturers. I can drop the thing and get it replaced haha.

And yea i didn't get a warrenty. funny thing is i buy the warrenty for my friends birthday gift along with the ipod. I should have gotten one for myself. I'm a dick

Yeah Mikey that would not make you a dick though lol... kinda the opposite since you did that for your friend and not yourself. Yeah Ket I wouldn't buy a expensive portable system just for emulated games. I want new stuff haha, can play emulated stuff on my PC, laptop (piece of shit lol) and a pocket pc.

the psp is a failed atempt itself in my opinion. its a nice looking device yes, its very sleek. but its just not worth the money. i bought one around christmas time, and i have used it twice. ive watched one movie on it. shaolin soccer. and after 20 minutes i stopped it because my neck was starting to hurt from looking down at the small screen. and my arms were getting tired. omg why buy a umd when you can buy a dvd?

This comes at no surprise, especially since I worked at a video store...

30dollars for a portable movie, to watch on a mini screen... Just didn't seem fair. We had to continuously make cheap sells to get them out of the store. We had so many, lol... Especially when we started getting ALL the new releases as PSPs and the anime, too. Anime was pretty cheap, though, I think.

Fuck, lol, at one point Gantz was what, 30dollars on normal DVD for 2 episodes? (Ranma a long time ago, as well.) The PSPs are nice like 12 dollar cheapies 2-3 episodes. :D

I really think the big problem with the PSP is the price points on everything. The games are more expensve than gameboy games, the movies are expensive and the unit itself is expensive.

Nintendo did a great job on making a fun and cheap handheld system. They own the hand held market simply because of this price point they have.

I think its what nintendo is trying to do with consoles, hence the system being underspec'ed but 100s of dollars cheaper.
