POP LIFE: THE JOKE'S ON US

How can any comedian get as famous as Dane Cook has with no jokes?

ROB SHEFFIELD

Taylor Dayne. Cookie Monster. The Great Dane next door. Cooke City, Montana. A prune Danish. The Bugs Bunny cartoon that goes, "Cook! Where's my hasenpfeffer?" This is just a partial list of things that are funnier than Dane Cook, but let's stop here or we could go on all day, like one of Dane's monologues. Yeah, we get it: the world's hottest comedian, a success story, the MySpace generation, blah to the blah, but where are the fucking jokes? Dane, did you bring any jokes at all? Or did you just figure you'd think of some after you got famous? His success is his whole story, with his hit album Retaliation, his HBO special Vicious Circle, his Jessica Simpson comedy Employee of the Month. But when does the funny start? How can any comedian get this famous with no jokes? It's like he's a lovable character Will Ferrell made up for an upcoming media-prank comedy, Funnyguy: The Legend of Dane Cook.
Tune in to Dane, and you'll hear old "ya ever notice?" gags you thought would never walk again. You will learn about airports, driving, the ways women are different from men (they cry!), and how people call you "pal" when they're not your pal. "Why are we still requesting people say 'cheese'?" Dane asks. "Was there a time in history when like, photography and cheese were like, the shit?" The best line on Retaliation goes, "He was hit by a Dodge, which I found funny and ironic." I can't wait to figure out which old Emo Philips record that one comes from.

Other comics resent him, not so much for success as for biting routines from Louis C.K. and still not being funny. Dane could be reading aloud from Dave Berg's "The Lighter Side of" in Mad magazine, or he could be Animal House if you thought Neidermeyer was the funny one, but it doesn't matter. Either way, he's huge. Go to his Web site, where he earned his rep as a marketing whiz, and you notice there's no comedy, just essays about how hard he's worked. "Great news!!!" he writes. "We already made back our entire budget and now the movie is making a profit. This is great for me and my cast. It has sent a message that I can open a film up against huge competition." Dane, did you wonder if we noticed Employee of the Month was the assest movie Andy Dick's ever been in, and that includes The Hebrew Hammer? We did! In his Danecasts, he doesn't crack jokes; he listens to Coldplay, replies to his New Friend Requests and urges us to go see Employee of the Month. "Thank you for wanting to check in with me," he muses. "Five million people downloading the Danecast, and let me tell you, it's just gonna get better." You're welcome! So -- heard any good jokes lately?

I don't know, he may not have many jokes, but he's still pretty funny regardless. It's more in how he tells a story than anything. This month it seems pretty trendy to bash on Dane Cook.

I think he's funny, but doing a movie with Jessica Simpson as a lead character probably wasn't a good move. I still remember his opening monologue when he hosted SNL being one of the funniest 5 minutes ever.

Mitch Hedberg > Jim Gafigan > Dane Cook

Oh and Lewis Black fits somewhere in there too.

Dane cook is good. He rarely tells jokes though, if you stop to notice great comedians, you'll see that jokes are rarely told. What's funny is the way they tell stories, or their thoughts and prespectives of things.

Stand up has its own kind of audience, from Eddie Murphy, to Kings of comedy & dave chappelle to our dane cook, all told stories and reflections in a very funny way.

Rob Sheffield is just being a jew and he's upset that he isnt as famous as dane.

Dane Cook is awesome. Like others said, he's funny because of the way he tells his stories. His old CD "Harmful if Swallowed" is fucking brilliant. "Retaliation" was good but not as good. "Vicious Circle" was funny towards the end. Some of his earlier bits about crying and religion drug on too long, and weren't too funny. I haven't seen "Employee of the Month" yet so I can't comment on that.

Anyways I think that Rolling Stone article is stupid and I disagree with it. I don't think Dane Cook is the funniest person on the world, but he's way better than they make him out to be.

It was prolly written by some jealous dude who wanted to be a comedian but wasn't good enough to have the kind of success Dane did. I'm on the fence, I like what little I've seen and heard of Dane Cook, I do think he got some boosted notorioty by appealing to a younger crowd (as when I first heard about him it was through the posts on messageboards by teenage girls.) I think he's funny, but not some comic genius or anything, and sometimes he's a little annoying because he's so animated, like it's fun to watch or listen to, but if you had him as a friend and were at some party and busted out his routine you'd walk away pretending to not know him.... either way, it's just another case of as soon as something becomes noticed as cool in the mainstream it suddenly becomes really uncool, and a lot cooler to bash it and dislike it, but one opinion shouldn't sway you, afterall, entertainment is all subjective right? Dowhatchalyke.

Cook is funny and he's coming into his own. Yet, he's in a business where it's dog-eat-dog and I can see why people don't like him. The thing is lately alot of new talent (even though Dane Cook has been around for quite a while) is shaking up the older "powers that be" in all the facets in the entertainment industry and here is the catch: the older people realize they're gonna be out of a job or replaced. Pop culture changes like the weather and younger people welcome it while older people get all vindictive and cold because "they're not cool anymore." You can tell the author of the article is biased as hell just by the way he writes about Dane Cook, but is it because he doesn't like Cook personally, for his ability to market himself into the status he has, or because he just doesn't get Cook's humor will be unknown unless we meet this author.

Rolling Stone sucks ass anyways. They always put musicians with very little to no talent on the cover. Something tells me none of their writers play a musical instrument. I doubt they have the best sense of humor or know jack shit about comedy either. I really don't know why people read that magazine at all. That being said, I don't think Dane Cook is anything special.

dane cook sucks and so does rolling stone magazine. I remember seeing dane cook one time years ago on one of those "here's a comedian for 30 minutes" non-specials on comedy central and thinking he sucked the balls. Years later now he's headlining madison square garden or some shit with a bunch of retarded frat dudes pissing their pants laughing. I hope he gets chlamydia.
