1/3 = 0.3 repeating TRUE
1/3 * 3 = 1 TRUE
0.3 repeating * 3 = 1 TRUE
0.3 repeating * 3 = 0.9 repeating? FALSE

As far into the 0.3333333333333333333333 as you want to go there will always be a bit more. That little bit more is what adds up to the 1/infinity that is needed to make 1/3 * 3 = 1.

For some reason, this thread makes me want to sing.

Big wheel keep on turnin',
Proud Mary keep on burnin',
Rollin, rollin, rollin on the river.

I barely finished page one, however, I know enough math to do the following:

Time it took many of you to coherently reply: Oh say 2 minutes

Time it takes to read others explanations, and or this thread: 5 minutes (4 if you're a math wiz!)

Time it took for you guys to come back and reply: maybe 3 minutes

Time it took for those numbers to forever stay the same as they were in the first post: nada

Time it took for me to stop caring and make a sammich?

10minutes (because I'm not a math wiz)

LOL i was thinking that too - very scary :o :o :o

But on that note here's the math behind the math (OMG such a cool phrase)

1/3 = .33333333 repeating. So 1/3 = 33 1/3 % (not just 33% as many believe)
2/3 = .66666666 repeating. So 2/3 = 66 2/3 % (not just 66% as many believe)

33% would be .33 not .33333333333333_

Thus 66+33 = 99 (that's what most people get and are confused about) What you are forgetting to add is the 1/3 and 2/3 for the repeating 3's and 6's respectively. thus you get your 100 when you add these in.

The reason your calculator comes out with 1 (if you have a scientific calculator) is because it is aware of the correct number of 33 1/3

man - that was easy (easy button here)

I seriously wanna go to my bank and see what I can get with these claims.

I. Interval [0,1) is defined as the interval from 0 up to but not including 1

II. Interval [0,1) upper bound is defined as 0.999...

III. As an upper bound, 0.999... is a member of [0,1)

IV. By definition (I.), 1 is not a member of [0,1)

V. Therefore 0.999... does not equal 1
