Mikey ozone depletion is really a different issue than global warming. Similar causes, similar effects, but still a different issue. If I remember correctly Ozone is just O3 and it regenerates itself as oxygen breaks up in the atmosphere or something.

According to my geology teacher a few years ago, Global warming is a normal stage in the planet's life. We're actually just coming out of the last ice age, hence the warming up. Although humans are speeding up the process, It is a normal thing.

Yeah I would too if I didnt have to drive, shovel and deal with all the other crap that involved with snow.

Here's an interesting theory about global warming.

Cosmic Rays Linked to Global Warming
By Sara Goudarzi
LiveScience Staff Writer

Earth's recent warming trend might in part be due to a lack of starlight reaching our planet, a new study suggests. But other scientists are not so sure.

According to a theory proposed a decade ago, when a star explodes far away in the Milky Way, cosmic rays—high-speed atomic particles—go through the Earth’s atmosphere and produce ions and free electrons.

The released electrons act as catalysts and accelerate the formation of small clusters of sulfuric acid and water molecules, the building blocks of clouds. Therefore, cosmic rays would increase cloud cover on Earth, reflecting sunlight and keeping the planet relatively cool.

However, because the Sun’s magnetic field—which shields the Earth from these rays—doubled in intensity during the last century, there has been a reduction in cloudiness, a possible contributor to Earth’s warming.

Scientists at the Danish National Space Center mimicked chemistry of the lower atmosphere in a large reaction chamber. They created a mixture that contained gasses at realistic concentrations and used an ultraviolet lamp to act as the Sun.

Microscopic droplets, precursor to clouds, started floating in the air of the reaction chamber.

“We were amazed by the speed and efficiency with which the electrons do their work of creating the building blocks for the cloud condensation nuclei,” said team leader Henrik Svensmark, Director of the Center for Sun-Climate Research at the Danish National Space Center. “This is a completely new result within climate science.”

The results however, may not transfer to natural conditions outside the controlled laboratory environment.

“Studies that have evaluated the claims that global cloud cover is related to changes in cosmic rays find that if you re-examine this matter outside of the brief period which they used, the relationship falls apart,” said Raymond Bradley director of the Climate System Research Center at the University of Massachusetts. Bradley was not involved with the study.

The researchers agree that further study is needed to estimate the contribution of this mechanism to the recent warming of the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans.

This work does not mean that there is no human influence on climate, Svensmark told LiveScience. “But it might be necessary to revaluate the climate sensitivity to carbon dioxide.”

The study was detailed online this month in the Proceedings of the Royal Society A.

if everyone in the world got up and started running around, working up a huge sweat, I wonder if that would raise the temperature of the earth's surface?

the only new energy is almost entirely from the sun (and other stars), but energy in the human would get converted from chemical bonds in glucose, for instance, into new forms of energy like heat. so the human provides heat but not new energy.

oh and mikey. Thats just your observation. Personally I feel like its been getting colder every year earlier and earlier. I cant remember the last time I saw snow in october.

Holy shit I made this post before I even read anything else in this thread(Including the topic title)

Heat IS energy. But you are correct in saying it provies no "new" energy, because all energy exists and never gets used up, it just gets converted into new forms or unusable forms.

I still keep my strong stance that Global Warming is not caused by Humans. Not that I dont think we couldnt do it (its totally possible), I just think theres got to be some other possible explination.

Anyway I read about this and I found it very interesting.

Mars Melt Hints at Solar, Not Human, Cause for Warming, Scientist Says
Kate Ravilious
for National Geographic News

February 28, 2007
Simultaneous warming on Earth and Mars suggests that our planet's recent climate changes have a natural—and not a human- induced—cause, according to one scientist's controversial theory.

Earth is currently experiencing rapid warming, which the vast majority of climate scientists says is due to humans pumping huge amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Mars, too, appears to be enjoying more mild and balmy temperatures.

In 2005 data from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor and Odyssey missions revealed that the carbon dioxide "ice caps" near Mars's south pole had been diminishing for three summers in a row.

Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of the St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, says the Mars data is evidence that the current global warming on Earth is being caused by changes in the sun.

"The long-term increase in solar irradiance is heating both Earth and Mars," he said.

Solar Cycles

Abdussamatov believes that changes in the sun's heat output can account for almost all the climate changes we see on both planets.

Mars and Earth, for instance, have experienced periodic ice ages throughout their histories.

"Man-made greenhouse warming has made a small contribution to the warming seen on Earth in recent years, but it cannot compete with the increase in solar irradiance," Abdussamatov said.

By studying fluctuations in the warmth of the sun, Abdussamatov believes he can see a pattern that fits with the ups and downs in climate we see on Earth and Mars.

Abdussamatov's work, however, has not been well received by other climate scientists

I realize this is unproven science, but seriously, I think people are too quick to shoot down new ideas just because they dont fit the norm. Im not anti-global warming. I just think that if people are going to run around claiming the sky is falling they need a bulliet proof case to back it up.[/quote]

We've entered a period of warming and ice ages in the past, however it's established that humans are contributing to the already warming trend. The real question might be: "how much have we done?" So it might be good to invest in ways we can stem climate change since if we lose the gulf stream the U.K. would be sorta fucked. Other parts of the world might thrive with climate change while other parts might become harder to live. Also the end result of this is basically an ice age I think. So, we're also speeding up towards an ice age basically, but no idea when that's supposed to happen. Regardless though if we do have an ice age we'll lose Canada and the United Kingdom underneath glaciers, so lol

lol ok yeah I shouldnt have said it like that. I do think that "Mankind" has made an impact, it would be ignorant to state otherwise. I just hate seeing people running around like we are 100% responsible and if we dont do something soon the world will explode! I think even if we do cut down everything to the point that the world is very "Greed friendly" that we are still going to see tempatures rising and so on. The news about Mars having a similar incress in tempature is very interesting and for me it just really nails down the fact that "no one can be sure".

Even if we aren't doing as much damage as Al Gore says we are, it's a good move to go towards using more "green friendly" technology. Clean air is a good thing.

Whether or not global warming is caused by humans is not even relevant. It's common knowledge that human civilization has been seriously draining on the earth since the Enlightenment. Global warming is just the most inherently dangerous and upfront risk that can be examined. Whether or not it's caused by humans or not doesn't change the fact that the same measures will have to be taken anyways.

Not to mention there was recently a meeting with over a thousand scientists from over one-hundred countries who came to the consensus that global warming is most likely caused by humans. It'll be interesting to see "scientists" that suddenly appear with "evidence" to the contrary, seeing as they're probably backed by a government or the private sector.

edit: my post is basically saying the exact thing as reinheld's
