My Dad is sending me $850 to get a laptop. I will be using it mostly for PowerPoint & Word, for research in grad school. The only time its performance will really be under scrutiny is when I present PowerPoint in front of large groups.

So I'm thinking I want
-Name brand
-1G RAM
-60G+ HD
-Good processor
-Lightweight
-Durable
-Vista

Anyone have advice? I was looking at this:

but i dont know much about laptops

I don't know much about laptops, but my sister got one from Dell for 750$ that ran WoW and FFXI the only thing i forgot to upgrade on it was the sound, and i got no BGM in FFXI, but it worked well for all her college needs.

When i worked at bestbuy i was #1 seller of laptops (avg. of 10 a day) and back in the day Toshiba's were the way to go. Currently i own a HP laptop in which i've been dissapointed with since i purchased, i have a small sony laptop as well which kicks ass and at work 2 toshibas for when i need mobile work. I also have a Acer notebook that has been a champ since i got it.

I really like toshiba, i had a minor battery problem with one (more like a power connection problem) which i fixed myself by popping it open and doing a minor soldering work.

Here are the laptops i own:

Acer
Sony
HP
Toshoba (a135's) 1 (cant find the other)

I really hate the HP because it seems like it was cheaply made, cheap materials and its kinda flemsy. The acer is used for doing templates and its a tank, i've let it fall from waist high quite a few times and no problems. The sony i use when i'm not at the office and i need real mobile work done, its a great tiny laptop, it's very reliable, but it gets really hot. One toshiba is at the office, other at m house, both are on for most of the day (i turn off my house one from time to time). These babies are beasts, they are sturdy and dont feel cheap at all.

what blows now Whisp is all the new laptops (or brand new ones) are being outfitted with Vista. What sucks about that is printers, scanners and a few other devices haven't caught up yet, and Vista still has its own kinks. So be careful as to which platform and laptop you pursue.

price as is (not sure if powerpoint is included there though) but interesting price

I bought my laptop at CompUSA over off Pleasant Hill in Duluth and I took out a 3 year warranty/protection plan and was very happy with the results. Plus if you visit them it can be like buying a car where they throw in a buncha shit for free or come down on price (like a printer or something)

oh yea, and they're offering your model you're scoping for cheaper!

I was in a rush when i posted up there, but i hope it helped a little. Toshiba and Sony seems to take the cake in the laptop area. Nice buy btw =]

Funny, I used my friend's toshiba satellite extensively today.

Hopefully you aren't getting it for gaming.
