Yeah me and Whisp saw Dream Theater in concert a couple years ago, and I have to say it was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

My Favs:
Change of Seasons
Scenes from a Memory
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

Yeah I've been a DT fan for a while now. lol

Favorites are
Stylistically: Falling Into Infinity... just love it lol
Musically: Scenes from a memory (Dance of eternity is just a nightmare to plow through on guitar... my hands hurt so much haha)

What did you guys think of Train of Thought? I think it has a lot of really great moments and it's a great heavy album, I just have a problem with John Petrucci's somewhat sloppy phrasing, but that's the intent of the album I guess. To be this sort of raw aggressive monster. It's nice to go back and listen to some of his more memorable solos "Scarred, Trial of Tears, and stuff from a Change of Seasons (particullarly the Carpe Diem section.)

I listen to these guys too much. I guess I'm kind of a DT addict. >.> haha

I listended to Train of Thought when it came out and I wasn't initially impressed, so I haven't gotten into it. I remember thinking that every DT album has progressively gotten more complex and added new ideas, and that Train of Thought seemed like a step backwards.

If you like progressive metal, they are the cream of the crop.

I think if you take a look at the complexity behind each the albums, I'd Put Six Degrees and Falling Into Infinity. While Scenes from a memory was a good album, I think Six Degrees was the first album where each other the band members was allowed all of their own creative output considering the early parts of on scenes from a memory were demoed in 1996ish. Six Degrees was a more orchestral composed album, especially the second disc.

As far as Train of Thought goes, do I think it's as complex as theother albums? No, but it fits my preferences more. I dunno why, but I've always liked the heavier side of DT, probably why The Mirror/Lie is one of my favorite songs they've released. I don't neccessarily see it as a step backwards in what they've released thusfar, considering they're defining progressive music with every album they release. It's not like Metallica when they decided to ditch everything that made them succesful in the first place and release that filth (at least in my opinion) that is St. Anger. I remember reading some DT boards and people started to flame the band for "losing their musical touch." Honestly, if I would've went to Berklee like I had planned to my senior year and studied in the guitar program there, I'd want to try as many things as possible if I got into an experimental/progressive band like that.

I don't want you to get the wrong idea, TS. I'm just voicing how I feel, especially considering I don't have a lot of people I know who are into the whole progressive rock/mental scene :? I'm not flaming you or saying anything close to "omg your opinion is sooo wrong," because music is all about a person's preferences irl. I must also apologize to the people who read this who have no idea what the hell we're talking about. haha

Oh, and Whisp how long have you been playing guitar irl?

i started playing in 95
i was at my peak around 99
in 2001 i tried to form a band with Thunderstomp lol (Wes irl), and my brother, and a friend of mine
my friend was really bad about not showing up, and if he did show up to play he'd get sidetracked on retarded rap-joke songs with my brother
when that band didn't make it, i put down the guitar for 3 years. i do plan to play again

Change of Seasons was the album that got me hooked. I would also recommend Scenes from a Memory. There old school stuff is good, but it sounds a little dated IMO.
