Great thread - hits home.

Supplements to start if you're into that.
Protein powder - Not much on the taste, but works nicely to bulk / tone.
Creatine - helps give the muscles that extra pep.
Glutamine - reduces the muscle fatigue normally.

These are the basic 3 - I'd skip the energy tablets they advertise. Hydroxycut an such. They won't help you at the early stages, your nutrition is a much more complex problem in most cases than not having the energy to keep up on your routines. (Not to mention most are caffeine loaded and you will be up for hours if you workout late in the day)

Food
You want a hardcore clean diet - worked great for my wife and I - try the South Beach Diet. It's not anti-carb - it's clean the body of cravings. (ie: McDonald's or Starbucks...) It's a bear those first two weeks, but if you stick with it, by the third, it's awesome.

From what I can see - Yarr is in the second stage of the S Beach diet anyway. Good carbs - lots of water and protein. Nice balance.

At my low I was 180 lbs. Today I'm a 4 pack and 200lbs of lean mass. Somewhere I grew shoulders in the past year as well after going around for a lifetime with big legs and no upper torso.

You talk about abs popping in. Make sure you work all 3 types out. Most people starting out only hit 1 set. (upper abs) Make sure you target the middle and the lower ones. (crotch ab comment above) Obliques love some attention too. Don't leave those out.

--- man wish I wasn't slacking at work. I wanna go to the gym now...
