The Old Testament chronicles the lives of Jews and others who lived before Jesus, who had been promised a savior by God, and were waiting for him. This text contains many stories about people demonstrating faith in God and also provides historical information about the era. The New Testament is unique to Christianity, for it centers around the figure of Jesus and his effect on the world. Christians believe that Jesus is the one that the Old Testament foretold,

From what I see you don't believe in Catholicism because:

1) It has rules. It controls me.

Listen, there are more rules you need to follow when filling out your tax return or walking down the street. Yes these are meant to control you. Catholicism has rules to control you? Duh... thanks for stating the obvious. You really didn’t expect to get something or nothing did you?

2) What’s with this Old Testament? It makes no sense.

Oh the horror. All I can say is: Don’t worry about it because A) we are Catholics, not Jews. Everything important is in the New Testament (except for the prophecy that a messiah will come) B) Even Jesus used metaphors and stories to teach people about God instead of giving a straight answer to questions like: How old is God, Does God have a girlfriend…etc. At the end of the day it you don’t need to know how many loaves of bread he made or how he turned water into wine. All you need to know is that there is a God and the only way to him is through Jesus Christ.

3) I believe in Evolution / Darwinism. I need facts.

That’s great. I’ve taken a few Astronomy and Biology classes too. Have you ever calculated the possibility of life randomly starting on some lucky planet and then it evolving into intelligent life (i.e. life forms capable of reading/writing, building nukes, etc.)? You think it’s a billion to 1? A trillion to 1? A doubt there is a bookie in Vegas that would touch these odds. Bet the possibility of God creating everything is looking better and better now eh? Isn’t knowledge grand?

Bet you’re still asking if we are monkey men right. Well lets see… Given the amount of genetic material is finite, there are only a limited number of combinations that will give forth life. Of these, a subset will be viable given the environmental conditions of Earth (ie will need to breath oxygen not methane, will need to resist sunlight etc. ) Of these, only a smaller subset will be practical. Men with 6 penises on their foreheads maybe cool but not likely to be practical. Assuming God knew all this that’s why we share similar characteristics with other animals. Is this really that shocking? I doubt it.

But I need facts… What, like those who said the world was flat? Or those that said the moon was make of green cheese? All you need to do is believe in God and Jesus. Yea I’m sure that’s pretty tough.

4) I’m Gay.

Whoopee’D Doo! Like that stops our priests. Come join the other 6 billion sinners we have ranging from liars and cheaters to murders and rapists. If being gay/lesbian is the only mark against you, you are probably a lot further ahead than most of us.

5) I’m intelligent. I went to X university. I can make my own religion.

Intelligent? Ha hahahaaha. Hate to break it to you but you probably don’t have any more up stairs than everyone else around here. If you are in MENSA, that’s great. Although, there are Catholics in MENSA too… If my own university experiences are anything to go by intellectuals kill more brain cells with beer than any other people I’ve met. Three cheers for being an intellectual.

So you wanna make your own religion? Good luck sparky. Sure you might be able to convice a few people that you know the real way to live or when aliens come to pick up their chosen faithful. But being a make up religion limits you to rewards in this lifetime since you have no heaven. When people realize this and that your ‘rules’ are only holding them back from having a good time on this little planet they will dump you faster than hotpants in Alaska.

Of course you don’t have to believe in God and Jesus. That’s what free will is about. Being free to make so many mistakes that you finally realize the truth was right under your nose all along. Hopefully it’s not too late by the time that happens though. Although I hear death bed conversions are all the rage anyway.

Fossilu does have a point, the probability of life emerging in a universe hostile to life is infinitessimal without some sort of intelligent designer controlling things.

yeah those odds are small because you view the universe as being finite, might be hard for you to imagine the infinite maybe. i dont care if theres a .0000000000000001% chance of something happening out of infinite tries it is 100% going to happen (my degree in math tells me so :P) so your point there is moot. and if you cant see evolution everywhere around again, need to open your eyes heh. the process of evolution is mostly random, it is not something life can "strive for" its something that just happens through minute changes (well unless man starts fucking with it like we do breeding animals). if your saying genetic traits cannot be passed on from parent to child (which is pretty much what your saying when you say you dont believe in evolution) then ill refer to my previous post, your asking me to prove the "theory" of gravity to you.

and as far as dissing people who get an education, wtf haha your dissing people who dont just blindly belive is some concocted scheme and strive to make there own decisions about life and educate themselves? lol i mean ahahahah im sorry i mean ROFLFAHSLFIAJLSHAHAHALAHLSTYPICALDUMBASSRELIGOUSFANATIC

oh and a more serious point somone asked why i think big bang is bullshit, someone here pointed it out i forget who but im referring to the acceletory nature of the heavenly bodies in relation to each other were discovering which is leaving alot of big bang theorists scratching there heads about the whole thing now like hmmm ok i dunno

Ruby, that's a flawed analogy to be honest. Microevolution, sure, you'd have to have your head in the sand to disbelieve in that. However, macroevolution CANNOT be tested or observed, and we rely on a fossil record with...well....too many dubious findings to support it's premises. The Cambrian explosion, the fraud surrounding the archaeopteryx, the refutation of the Miller Experiment, and Haeckel's fabricated embryonic depictions come to mind. It seems to me that people WANT macroevolution and materialism to be true even though they may not be. Darwinism is kinda starting to become its own religion, as faith is required now for it;-)

im just talking evolution in general, its fact that it happens on at least a small scale basis (im making no decisions as to on what scale it happens here, but again .000000001% chance of things happening over an infinite amount of time...............talking evolution in general not just the limited age of earth) but people who diss evolution have no idea what it really is, they come up with dumbass shit like we came from modern day apes and its like man how hard do i have to slam the bible on your nose for you to get your fucking head out of it and look at the world around you

Problem is, after just taking a year of moral theology, I can say without a doubt that Fossilu is just wrong.

Catholicism doesn't place rules on us, the rules have always existed. They are not rules, but the way "things are."

CS Lewis: Mere Christianity explains it far better than I can(I'm going to keep plugging it until someone reads it).

ppl want proff of things to believe them. Prove me there isnt a god and ill stop believing lol. Ppl are soo hypicritical when they say well i dont believe in a god cause theres no proff but they have no way to prove one doesnt exsist. Evolution cant really be proven cause theres missing links yet you wont believe in a god. hmm

You honestly are trying to say that religion has more substaintied evidence than science? That is a first, indeed.
