The draft bill failed. Interesting note though - unless I'm mistaken it looks like it wasn't a republican who proposed it.

Edit: It only got 2 votes - amazingly enough neither of those were from republicans either.

Draft talk was brought up by DEMOCRATS not REPUBLICANS. Seriously, Bush's campaign never once mentioned that they'll start drafting people.

Bush has parts that he didn't do a good job with. However, in comparison Kerry's plans were fabulous. But you know what? He can't pay for it. There's no way he can tax enough top 2% and double tax top 1% to pay for all of his plans. Free health insurance for low income family? Give me a fxxking break. It'll be the middle class who ends up paying for the low income family. Would I vote for Kerry? No thanks!

The presidential race was tight, meanwhile the house, senate, and other local elections this season shifted extremely to the right. Even Tom Daschle, the majority/minority leader or whatever, lost to some no-name. America is crying out for Republicans. Do you think it's more for financial reasons or social/religious reasons? (I think it's religion). Has anyone else noticed the huge media shift to the right that preceeded everything? It's scary. Next thing you know there will be government-funded prayer, the gap between rich and poor will reach its all time high, and we'll be at war with 30 random countries.

Considering the huge rightist shift, Kerry did pretty well coming so close to winning. I thought Bush would win by a lot more than that.

Personally I think it's more financially related. People are sick of getting taxed for social programs. Just watch the stock market. Yesterday when Kerry was announced to have an advantage, it tanked. Now that it looks like Bush is going to win it's going back up. Also, speaking as a conservative and a Bush supporter, I can tell you that my backing of him is based on his economic views. I don't give a crap about his religous views.

I think the decision was probably based on self-centered entertainment of issues. That worked out well for either candidate as they both hit that angle rather well, which is probably why the race was so close.

Disclaimer: Sorry if i stereotype religious people, you aren't all like this, just 99% of the ones i met.

Why do I think religion played a factor? First of all, I have read and heard religious people for the last year and a half constantly talking about bush is a godsend, kerry is a badman, etc. They have this way of spreading opinion around through church and family and copying each other, and pressuring everyone to believe the same way as they do. If you don't believe the way they do, you'll get: smacked with a newspaper, your leg hair pinched, and the lovely "you don't want me to hate you?" just like I got this week lol. I saw the statistic last night, 87% of born-again christians voted bush. Hello? Copy-cat-fever? You'll get stereotyped if 9 out of 10 of you are the same. Christians are a huge, huge, huge group in the USA, so if they all go off voting one way, I'm doomed. Utah is the most religiousy state and look..71% bush.

oh btw the senator who won in Idaho...his name is Michael Crapo

I agree with Mythrandir and believe it's financially related. I really don't believe government will be able to push religion fund raisers through as it is clearly that US government is working under the seperation of church and state.

We actually think Bush was going to lose this election before the poll results were announced.

I don't think that group mentality is specific to religious groups. Any time which an individuals identifing group comes into jeparody that person will more than likely respond in a manner to regain favor. Thus, any majority group will prepetuate itself under copasetic circumstances.

Bush won because of the the times that face our country right now. We are facing terrorist threats constantly and never know if and when we will be attacked again. In times of war the country has almost always voted Republican. Why? I fell its because the Republican canindate has always showed more backbone and a more stern and straightforward way of leading.

Now that being said. I think the only reason this race was even close was because of the war in Iraq. If the election took place a year ago today Bush would have probably won every single state in the US (Polls this time a year ago Bush Approval about 85%). But since the war has dragged on and more people have lost their lives to the violence in Iraq this divided the country just like every single war in our history has. Fortunately the same people who began to turn away from the war also brought out more people to the polls that feel our nations security is the most important topic in this years election.

So this i why i feel that Bush is now our President for another 4 years.

I think the single biggest injury to Kerry's campaign was the amount of negative ads he ran. In the past couple weeks where I live (near Philadelphia) I noticed a big increase in all the anti-Bush ads and a big decrease in the amount of ads run by the Bush campaign in general. During this last week, I didn't see a single commercial break that didn't have an anti-Bush ad in it. That came back to bite Kerry in the ass in my opinion because it desensitized people to it. The republicans seemed to pretty much just sit back and allow Kerry to shoot himself in the foot.

Of course you could say that it also brought out a large number of gay people who voted for Kerry. Religion, sexual preference, financial status are all large factors on the way people vote.

The more extreme Christian sects usually vote Republican
Lower income and union workers usually vote Democratic
Corporate executives usually vote Republican

You can take your arguement on how religion affects the way people vote and swap out religion with any number of factors. I'm sure it's not a lack of religion that made California and New York a Democratic stronghold this year. Yes there are people who vote based entirely on religious beliefs. There are also people who vote based entirely on the abortion issue.
