How can you say metal is juvenile? i like alot of bands and songs for both the music and the lyrics, some of them have deeper meanings than the shit Justin timberlake spews, but people complain because they can't understand those words.

Because it's superficial, unpoetical, thoughtless, ect. Just because you write about death and whatnot doesn't make it profound. I apply the same criticism to emo/goth poetry that always involves some combination of the words "death" "sorrow" and "darkness".

I used the term "juvenile" also because it's very childish to act boorishly aggressive. Metal projects this pseudo-angry front that just begs to be mocked. I suppose metalheads believe it's really cool to tackle people and "go crazy" at a show, but really they're just lacking the mature part of their brain that allows adults to sit in one place for a few hours without recess. Not to mention, many many kids LOVE metal.

No doubt I'm going to attract more flames with this post as well. Let's see how many of them are directed at my post or at me personally. I'm sure there are several people now who know me better than I know myself and are prepared to say so! #-o

No, I am. I've heard what you're about to say a million times, so don't even bother. I've said it myself a few times. Tschus.

This is my favorite song. "Dark Matter" again by Porcupine Tree. The lyrics don't really speak for it much because the deliver is shockingly well done. The verses are sung in this non-standard, uneasy, tipsy meter. Some lines are left with this distinctive unresolved dissonance that I just love.

Quote:
Inside the vehicle the cold is extreme
Smoke in my throat kicks me out of my dream
I try to relax but its warmer outside
I fail to connect, it's a tragic divide

This has become a full time career
To die young would take only 21 years
Gun down a school or blow up a car
The media circus will make you a star

Dark matter flowing out on to a tape
Is only as loud as the silence it breaks
Most things decay in a matter of days
The product is sold the memory fades

Crushed like a rose
In the river flow
I am I know

there has been like a massive tidal wave of bands that sound just like U2. the mimicry started with coldplay and still hasn't stopped. the last 2 videos are in that category. it's just so weak. phil anselmo could probably kick all their asses simultaneously.

Ok here is one i like

Quote:
Mudvayne - Forget To Remember Lyrics
What have I done?
Where have I come from?
When I burnt the backs with the sun through a glass did I seal
the loss that's become me?

Feeling undone
What have I become?
When I turned my back on you I turned my back on myself and
became this machine

Thoughtlessness
(I feel)Selfishness
(I feel)Hopelessness
(I feel)Arrogant

I feel it on the inside
Twisting and contorting
Memory has shaped me once again

Still feel you on the inside
Biting through and stinging
Will I ever forget to remember?

Shadows in the sun
Filter through us
Still wrestle the demons that arrested me as a child
Confession rejected
We grow up
To give up
People step on the cracks for wounds owed paid back
Through the words of surrender

Emptiness
(I feel)Loneliness
(I feel)Listlessness
(I feel)Worthless

I feel it on the inside
Twisting and contorting
Memory has shaped me once again
Still feel you on the inside
Biting through and stinging
Will I ever forget to remember?

Can you save me?
From myself
From these memories
Can you save me?
From myself
From these memories

Surrender
To the shadows
Haunting inside
Bleed through you
Surrender to the secretes...inside
Lies within you

I feel it on the inside
Twisting and contorting
Memory has shaped me once again
Still feel you on the inside
Biting through and stinging
Will I ever forget to remember?

Can't feel you on the inside
Set down the bag and left it
Lost memory has left me
One again
Open up the inside
Admission for the cleansing
Now that I've forgotten to remember

Surrender
To the shadows
Haunting inside
Bleed through you

Another song that gets to me is Broken home by Papa roach, if that could remotely be considered metal anymore probably just rock, and Staind - For you will always be another one that i connect with on a more emotional level.

Ponuh i read those lyrics, and suicide came to mind, isnt that about the same thing, being a song about death?

lol whisp i saw the helmet and died laughing.

As far as I can discern, Dark Matter is about the futility of being a struggling artist. Steven Wilson (the songwriter) is very tight lipped out the meanings of his songs. Oftentimes people grab many different meanings. "Blackest Eyes" (Click here to listen!) is apparently about the birth of a serial killer, rape, and all (it's part of a concept album). People grab vastly different interpretations.

Quote:
A mother sings a lullabye to her child
Sometime in the future the boy goes wild
And all his nerves are feeling some kind of energy.

Walk in the woods and I will try
Something in the trees that made you cry
It's so erotic when your makeup runs.*

I got wiring loose inside my head
I got books that I never ever read
I got secrets in my garden shed
I got a scar where all my urges bled
I got people underneath my bed
I got a place where all my dreams are dead
Swim with me into your blackest eyes.

A few minutes with me inside my van
Should be so beautiful if we can
I'm feeling something taking over me.

*That was the clue for me originally, lol. Oh, and the last line of the last verse "I'm feeling something taking over me" implies he's about to rape the woman. It's a really odd concept for the album but as the album progresses it takes a darker tone and the subject matter gets even darker. But the subject matter remains open to interpretation throughout.
Edit: had the wrong link oops

Here's a quote from David Thorpe of SOmething Awful that expresses my feelings about metal:

Quote:
Metal fans are simply too entrenched in their own art-killing quagmire to be swayed by any rational argument. Their synapses are too brutalized by bluntness to recognize subtlety ever again; real music may be forever useless to them.

Then this must be the point of contention, because I can clearly distinguish between bands like U2, Coldplay, and Arcade fire. I don't know what you mean by weak though, I mean they're not screaming words into a microphone, I think they're trying to sing if that's what your talking about, haha I wonder if this is something about how people are wired to be more sensitive to certain sounds than others because I swear to God every fucking Tool song sounds exactly the same to me, but when it comes to Alternative from Radiohead, Beck, the Decemberists, Neutral Milk Hotel, Arcade Fire, etc. I can really distinguish something that I enjoy as opposed to LOUD NOISES.

And this quote is worth repeating just because its awesome and it made me lol.

lol no see, every tool song does sound the same to a degree, im a big fan and i will admit that, but again its more in the lyrics.

Quote:
10.000 days (wings pt 2)

Listen to the tales and romanticize,
How we follow the path of the hero.
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun.
How we rise to the height of our halo.

Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior,
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations;
None of us have actually been there.
Not like you.

Ignorant fibbers in the congregation
Gather around spewing sympathy,
Spare me.
None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choices, hypocrites won't see.

But, enough about the collective Judas.
Who could deny you were the one who illuminated
You'll have a piece of the divine.

And this little light of mine, the gift you passed on to me;
I'll let it shine to guide you safely on your way,
Your way home ...

Oh, what are they going to do when the lights go down
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly?

High as a wave, but our eyes are upon the ground.
You [are / were] the light and the way, they'll only read about.
I only pray, [Heaven / God] knows when to lift you out.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough, you're going home.

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying:
"I have come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father.
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my, give me my wings!"

Give me my wings!

You are the light and way, that they will only read about.

Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance,
Burden of proof tossed upon the believers.
You were the witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion:
Should you see your Maker's face tonight,
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.
Hallelujah, it's time for you to bring me home.

This song is about Maynard James Keenan's mom, Judith Marie, who was paralyzed for 27 years, which is approximately 10,000 days. She was very religious, and this song is about her finding her savior now that she has passed away. and is one of my all time favs, next to

"The Pot"
Quote:
who are you to wave your finger? you musta been outta your head.
eye hole deep in muddy waters. You practically raised the dead.
rob the grave to snow the cradle then burn the evidence down.
soap box house of cards and glass so don't go tossin' your stones around.

you musta been high

foot in mouth and head up ass, so watcha talking bout?
difficult to dance round this one till you pull it out. boy

you musta been so high.

steal, borrow, refer, save your shady inference.
kangaroo done hung the jury with the innocent.

now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo. (musta) got lemon juice
up in your eye when you pissed all over my black kettle.

you musta been high.

who are you to wave your finger? so full of it.
eye balls deep in muddy waters. fuckin hypocrite.
liar, lawyer, mirror show me. what's the difference?
kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent.

now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo. (musta) got lemon juice
up in your eye when you pissed all over my black kettle.

you musta been high.

So who are you to wave your finger?
who are you to wave your fatty fingers at me?
you must have been outta your mind.
Weepin shades of indigo.

liar, lawyer, mirror for ya. what's the difference?
kangaroo be stoned. he's guilty as the government.

now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo. (musta) got lemon juice
up in your eye when you pissed all over my black kettle.

you musta been high.

eye balls deep in muddy waters.
you're balls deep in muddy waters.
Ganja, please, you must have been outta your mind.

In this song he's calling out all the hypocrites that criticize stoners, but are just as lazy and worthless. Druggies might be liars, but so are lawyers, there isn't much difference.

People get up on a soapbox and preach about what everyone is doing wrong, but they are standing in a flimsy house of cards. And people that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, because eventually they get back what they've dished out.

That's a clear reference when he talks about pissing on the black kettle. Ever hear the phrase, 'Pot calling the kettle black'? You see everyone else's faults but not your own.

I think they sound more like a bad version of The Talking Heads.

Not only do they wear suits and motorcycle helmets (lol), but in the second video some guy is wearing a suit and a scarf...any band that wears a scarf in a performance needs to have an immediate ass-kicking by phil anselmo (that can be his new job, now that he is bandless). I don't see how anyone could like this band.

Guitarist who hates lead singers right here. I really could do without vocals and lyrics in music. Just let keyboards, guitar or something else take up that melodic space. Some of my favorite songs are just instrumentals. I didn't get to listen to or watch any of the stuff people posted here, since I only view these forums from work really. I am sure it has its redeeming qualities and musical complexity. Metal lyrics suffer from the same problems almost all music suffers from.... its written by musicians and from my experience they aren't people you should be taking seriously.

You can't really call yourself a metal fan if you don't like Iron Maiden, thats just my opinion lol. Half of the metal these days is so influenced with chest beating hardcore/punk crap that it isn't even metal anymore. Most lyrics are crap, as evidenced by the shit that was posted in this thread and almost every lyric thread in existence. I am really sick of the shithouse poet musician that wants to write lyrics and try to influence people and push their own agenda. I don't care about their opinions, I come to shows to watch people play their asses off. Make some challenging and artistic music or get the fuck off the stage with your whiny agendas and ethics. I don't go to musicians to form my opinions (same could be said for the retarded Hollywood actors out there).

I don't like Iron Maiden, but then again i am not the one who would but Mudvayne, Metallica, and slipknot in that genre now a days, if not liking that Iron Maiden stuff means i don't like metal, i can accept that.

Run to the hills is a decent song tho, been on VH1 to much lol

Mudvayne and Slipknot are not really metal bands if you want to be purist about it. Metallica is thrash, they have punk influences that make them more than just a metal band (same goes for Slayer, Sepultura, Megadeth, etc). Iron Maiden is almost pure metal. The lines have been blurred quite a bit though and tons of shit is generally accepted as metal when it really is something else. Basically I call anything metal these days that has some aspects of metal in it. I like Mudvayne as well, but they aren't 1/5th the band Iron Maiden was in the 80s. I didn't like Maiden back then either (the 80s), I came to like them actually in the last few years (I was more of a thrash metal fan). Their influence is fucking huge. I hate alot of their songs, but I can't deny what they did melodically to influence the entire genre.

You know this is already a Whisp & TS vs. Ponuh & Cad? I mean we're not even talking about music anymore really, we're just seeing what we can bait from one another BECAUSE HIS PUSSY GIRL MUSIC DON'T HAVE COWBOYS AND SKULL STOMPIN' IN IT LOL. And I'm like HIS MUSIC IS OBNOXIOUS AND SILLY... actually I don't even know what I'm trying to say about pantera or whatever band you have a hard on for. But Phil Anselmo is a drug addict and we're all tools for defending people we don't even know, but regardless of all that you smell and dmitry loves hardcore gay porn. Good day sir.

To be fair about 50% of rock musicians are drug addicts lol... not just metal. Do you have a clue as to how many people who make a living off of music do cocaine? Phil Anselmo last I checked was a pothead, I am sure he has gotten onto the harder drugs by now. Too bad the most talented person in Pantera had to die so Phil "I try way too hard to sound tough" Anselmo can't ride his coattails anymore.
