Haha... I didn't even notice the "looting" guy was black =\ I thoguht it was because he took more or soemthing and need a garbage bag for it all....

At first i didn't notice anything was wrong. Then just a second ago i just noticed that the first picture had white people finding something from a grocery store. And the second was a kid dark skinned who did the same thing but for some unknown reason its labeled as him looting a grocery store...

Eh, I think this is a case of you guys reading way too much into this. If the white people had a giant bag of stuff I think it would have been labeled as looting too. And anyone finding just 1 soggy loaf of bread really doesn't seem like 'looting', heh. (Even though it also technically would be)

I think this thread is actually pretty clever. matti did you get this off a different forum or just stumble upon it?

Someone posted this on another forum I frequent and I liked the responses and wanted to see what people here would say about it.

Look there are two sides to this. There are white people looting and black people looting it is a matter of survival at this point. Some people(white and black) are getting diapers,batteries, food, and other essentials for survival. Some people(white and black) are looting 10 pairs of sneakers, electronics, guns and robbing atm machines and car jacking.

My aunt is a member of the NOPD(New Orleans Police Department) and was one of the officers that arrested the looter who shot and nearly killed a NOPD officer. The story is the NOPD officer was arresting another looter, when the shooter came behind and shot the officer. Also that night two armed men wit hAK-47s openned fire on a NOPD office downtown. There was a shootout but no one was injured. Another thing that she told us, was that when they see people taking food and those essential items from the stores, they don't even arrest them. It's the people that are looting beer, cigarettes, guns and shit like that that they are arresting.

Mys i don't think you have ANY clue as to the depth of the looting problem at the moment in New Orleans. I am from the area, my family has lived in the area for generations. The problem is BAD atm. When you say that 1 loaf isn't looting please watch the news or read the news sometime before posting ignorant comments. Marshal law was declared in NO immediately before the hurricane hit. President Bush is sending several thousand Army and Navy troops down to help with the problem. I personally hope they show no mercy to those low life bastards who are looting non-essential items.

Hmm, I did seem to say it *was* looting actually. I just said it doesn't "seem" like it compared to someone hauling away a giant bag of stuff. Before you call me ignorant please take the time to actually read my post and examine what this thread is about. It had nothing to do with the hardships going on in LA specifically but the word choice used by two reporters in somewhat similar photographs. When you hear the word "looting" what do you picture? Someone hauling away as much as they can carry most likely. The word "find" is much more positive... perhaps the item found was lost, or needed. (or both) So appending "find" to the picture with the people with the loaf of bread, to most people, would seem to fit.

This thread has nothing to do with saying "white people don't loot" or some nonsense like that. Like Cad said, it's about diction, perception, word choice, connotation, and what little information we can glean from a picture. (which may be incorrect entirely) Blame english if you must, or the AP. ;p
