Lol as much as i like Kanye's music what he said was stupid. It was nothing more than something to make him in the headlines and such, and it worked as his album sold HUGE and his single, Gold Digger, went #1. I mean Bush ain't the best president, but saying he don't care for black people, especially at a time like that is jus stupid. Ok ok, I'm late with this, bite me.

How is that only the president's fault??? Couldn't, say the governor of the state, or the mayor of the city, or the police, say "GET THE F*** OUT!!!!!!!!" They knew it was coming. Did the president absolutely need to go there just to say 'Evacuate!" Like I said, Bush as president = suck, but him being blamed for this was wrong. Kanye just wanted attention. sigh, flaming thread this will become haha.

I would imagine that it would be kinda like… hard to evacuate when you are poor and have no money and no reliable transportation. But then. I would imagine people talking shit about an area that they have NO idea about would kind of dumb and misinformed. So take your opinion on what people should have done and shove it. Because I LIVED there. I did work in those poor areas. I talked with people who had NOTHING but their families and their homes. How dare those fat rich media fucks sit there in there drinking their $12 espressos and in their $1000 designer suits and question why these people didn’t leave. Because they fucking couldn’t. For what ever reason, (omg lets not play the blame game!), they couldn’t leave.
How about stop bitching about why they didn’t leave, put down the camera and give those people some food and water.
And its not just the people who stayed in their homes. Their were hundreds of thousands of people in “safe” shelters who didn’t get supplies. People who DID do the best they could to find safety.
So stop talking about things that you have no idea about and go lose everything you have and see how well you take being ignored by your country.

True this was a very tragic event. One major difference between H. Andrew and this one would be: the levee breeching. You must also take a look at how many major hurricanes (cat3+) hit the gulf coast compared to Florida. Florida is more prepared. They go though a hell of a lot more.

In my opinion should there have been mass evacutations, yes. And by mass evacutations, I mean, getting everybody out via any resource you had at your finger tips. But we can stand here all day, talking about what should have happened, the fact is, it didn't.

We shall know in due time what went wrong, and what went right, but for him to go on TV and say bush doesn't like black people is morally wrong. He made a pompous ass out of himself by doing this during a tele-thon. True he is entitled to his opinion, but what he is doing is poison to the trust people have for the government. I do believe his single, "Gold Digger" was it, would suit his goal.

Lazyazn & Mintsy, I hope you both find your homes with little damage to them.

u know mintsy as much as i believe you that there were some people who couldnt get out, there were alot that just didnt. i watched that shit on the news alot and like 2-3 days before they showed tons of people who just said they wanted to wait it out they didnt think itd be that bad. maybe they were misinformed on the strength of the hurricane i dont know but alot of people just made the choice to stay. also im not sure on an exact figure but they had im gonna say 3-4 days prior warning.. in 4 days u could freakin walk out of the path of a hurricane so the transportation things kinda bs too

A. you wouldnt even have to walk constantly and B. if i was told there was gonna be a category 5 hurricane that would most likely sink new orleans completely (yes they did say that and if i knew it 4 days early in texas im sure people there did) then fuck yeah id start walking my happy ass out of the way if i had no other way. but thats just me. i also know i have friends/family and someone would come get me and help me out.

I imagine the 550+ RTA and school buses, a hundred or so parked less than a mile from the Superdome would have come in handy if the Mayor had actually wished to evacuate the people from the city.

Bus boats anyone?

I thought this quote was particularly compelling:

Quote:
Photographers recorded images of them lined up in neat rows and submerged — though one was commandeered by Jabbar Gibson, 20, who ferried 70 passengers to safety in the Reliant Astrodome.

It's sad when a private citizen basically has to hotwire a bus to get people to safety because the city is unable to coordinate opening a shoebox, much less an evacuation.

again with the talking about things when you don't understand:

People who have seen the photo of the flooded New Orleans Parish schoolbuses in an empty lot and think Blanco/Nagin is to blame for any evacuation problems should read this.

On the day of the storm, or perhaps the day after, FEMA turned down the state's suggestion to use school buses because they are not air conditioned, Blanco said Friday in an interview.

Even after levees broke and residents were crowding the Louisiana Superdome, then-FEMA Director Mike Brown was bent on using his own buses to evacuate New Orleans, Blanco said.

I think people are saying those buses should have been rolling days BEFORE the storm hit. Sending them in the day of and after kinda negates the purpose of trying to get to safety before tragedy strikes.

Why diddnt they just tell FEMA to fuck off, and use their own buses? Lack of air conditioning has to be the most retarded excuse ever heh.

again with the talking about things when you don't understand:

The school buses in question were under NO control however, not state. And it was a lack of drivers (basically no plan) that caused them not to be used by the Mayor. Additionally, the RTA buses are air conditioned. If you're actually from the area, I'm sure you've ridden on one before.

You'll note that even Blanco didn't have drivers for the buses, instead relying on the National Guard to drive those "non airconditioned" school buses to rescue people. Hi disaster planning, it's nice to meet you.

New Orleans and Louisiana actually have disaster plans for coordinating these *especially* since the number one known disaster that could affect them was EXACTLY what happened. They simply failed to follow them through.

They'll of course castrate FEMA for not taking control of the disaster once they were finally given permission, but in the end you'll find that the onus lies firmly on the Governors shoulders and more specifically on the Mayor of New Orleans.

To me it was simply a case of the local government not wanting to cede control when shit got out of hand. You don't call a mandatory evacuation of an entire city just 10 hours before a Category 4, almost 5 hurricane hits your fishbowl of a city, and not have an incredibly solid plan to evacuate the city. Even assuming they didn't have their heads up their asses, the evacuation plan for the city called for roughly twice that time frame.
