So there's this Bass forum I go to all the time and there's this one guy that always amazes me. To sum it up he's "one of the earliest pioneers of the 9-string bass" and he's freaking awesome. lol

Here's his site and for those too lazy to click the link here's some cool shit from it.

Bach clip
Mario theme

the Pac-man bass.

Family shot.

His current Conklin project.

And check out his Myspace site for a couple more clips. :D

That's what I was wondering.
I guess I could find out by watching the video but it woud break the magic. I'm just gonna keep pretending you need really long finger to play that bass, instead of doing taping or something.

9 string bass huh? crazy. Cant think of many people who cal work that other than John Myung, or Les Claypool because, well, hes the greatest bassist of all time. pretty interesting stuff, and that pac man bass is hot.

That last pic is of the 11 string progress. I think it's actually done - I'll see if I can get some pics of it from him. And I have to dissagree with Les Claypool being the best bassist of all time; he's just the best 'mainstreem' bassist of all time. Check out Stew McKinsey if you like original basslines/styles.

EDIT: here's the only finished shot of the 11 I could find atm.

Thank you, I wass starting to wonder if I was the only one who was going to say this ;p

How would the 11 string bass be tuned?

You figure a stand 4 string bass is tuned entirely in 4ths (EADG)
5 string BEADG
6 string BEADGC

There's no point in tuning below B because it would almost drop below human hearing range (If GGG existed on a piano it would be like 22 hz or something close to that, human hearing range is about 15-18,000hz)

So assuming tuned entirely in fourths it would be...

B E A D G C F Bb Eb Ab Db, which would be pretty lame.

I'm inclined to believe that the top strings 4 strings are tuned like a nashville tuning for guitar, (using thinner strings to tune up an octave). Having a F in there (tri-tone away from the low B) isn't exactly comfortable for playing unless you're like "omg B locrian onry" which most people aren't. lol

Any more information would be nice though. lol

EDIT: Found it.

The 11 string bass is tuned from C#00(17Hz) up to Eb(1/2 step below a guitar's high e string).

C# F# B E A D G C F Bb Eb

I'll check out Stew McKinsey when I get paid, seems rather interesting. And seriously, can they make guitars any bigger? Was that thing towed by that truck in the background?
