I'm not entirely sure why we are on the verge of a new format for movies. I can understand video games, but aren't regular DVD's fine as they are? I mean, VHS were outdated for sure when DVDs finally took hold. But that wasn't that long ago, was it? Some stores still carry VHS movies, and still continue to sell them. What do HD-DVD and Blu-Ray offer over regular DVDs that merit really expensive players, and really expensive versions of movies?

Will either of these new formats take hold?

well one thing is more space, blu ray and HDDVD hold roughly 30 gigs, more space also means less video compression. When CD and DVD players first came out they were like $500-1000. Being that they are both new formats they aren't that impressive. we have the demo's running at work and they don't look all that much better, not $1000 better anyway. but give it 2-3 years and it'll start to catch on.

hd dvds hold like 20-30 gigs. blue ray holds 50 gig plus.

normal dvds hold like 4.7 gigs or something.

The additional space will allow for better looking more impressive imaging.
Also with the use of high def cameras ( superman is using it) these studios will eventually need more space.

Atm hd-dvds support 720p, Blue ray will use true 1080p. Actually it will be able to use both

I honestly don't know how much clearer video can get. My current regular DVD player and TV get's 1080i with an hdmi connection. LCD TV's are a bit clearer but not by much. mostly due to the lack of glare. even with current video games the graphics can't get much better than they already are without some kind of 3d holoroom. i wonder what it'll be like in 2070 when i'm muttering to my 2nd generation of grandkids about how we used to watch these shows on flat screens and they were stored on little flat silver discs.

I know how much space they hold. But most people don't even have HDTVs yet, so why would we need special disks catered to people who have them? So now I can go out and buy a giant useless TV that has a better resolution? I don't see why I should care. For me, it doesn't seem to make sense to have a new format when there really isn't a need or market for one.

I totally understand where your coming from rein and let me explain why HD-DVD is the way of the future!

there is a huge quality difference in HD DVDs and DVDs. Forget all the technical bable. Its all about how it looks. When I first got my HD TV I watched a few DVDs with my jaw on the floor. The colours were nice, the picture was crisp. A few weeks later I signed up for HDTV.

I watched a few shows and was totally in love with HDTV. Discovery does 24/7 HD content and all prime time shows are in HD. All late night shows are also in HD. The late night shows (and SNL) are the best quality.

So what makes HD look so nice?

Well the colours are even more outstanding. However the biggest difference is the textures. I know it sounds like im talking about a 3d Engine, but im not. In HD you get a lot of textures that you dont see in normal SDTV. At first I started watching Connan and I realized just how old connan was. You can see all the wrinkles in his face.

The late night TV shows actually had a problem with how good the HD was. You see, TV makeup is different than most makeup. They do things differently because you dont see the fine details. This means stuff like blush is totally over done and caked on. When these late night shows started going HD viewers started to complain about how ugly everyone was. how all the Stars had horrible makeup and how the ones that didnt have caked on makeup had blemishes and pimples. They have since then fixed the makeup style and things look better. I remember Sunshine and I watched connan and were like "wow I had no idea connan wore so much makeup." It was actually really gross.

So really its the textures that make the difference. Wood looks more real when you can see the splinters sticking out. Oil slicks that look so real you could almost touch it. Discovery channel has amazing documentries. I remember one on bugs that was so real and disgusting I almost couldnt sleep. Sunshine almost cried because I wouldnt change the channel haha.

So anyway, after like 2-3 months of HD only I decided to watch some DVDs. When I put the DVD in I all the sudden realized just how outdated they were. The DVD I watched was "The Office Season 1" and I had been watching lots of the same show on HD TV. The colours looked washed out, the image was poor because we couldnt see the find details like textures.

I know its kind of corny to say this, but HD-TV really does look like your viewing something through a little window. HD-DVDs are going to be awesome for the same reason. I almost bought an HDDVD player but the start price of like 600 bucks and the library of 5 movies has put me off.

As for the difference between Blueray and HDDVD?

Quality wise Blueray is suppose to be better. It is suppose to do 1080p where HDDVDs are more 1080i(half the res basically). However since probably .01% of house holds have a 1080p TV I doubt anyone is concerned about that. Most new TVs under 4000CND do not have 1080p.

It just makes me mad that the Blade Runner Final Cut is coming out in December to DVD (all versions of the film included) and it's not even going to be on the cutting edge technology.

Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD at CNN.

Basically, the dude says he prefers blu-ray over HD-DVD, but would rather wait for a hybrid.
