THE MAN BEHIND 'IRON MAN'
Robert Downey Jr. to play Tony Stark in feature film
By Matt Powell

Posted September 29, 2006 10:08 AM

According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Robert Downey Jr. will portray Tony Stark in "Iron Man," the first feature film to be produced independently by Marvel Entertainment, with Jon Favreau directing and distribution by Paramount Pictures.

Originally, the comic debuted in the 1960s, and Iron Man's origin involved Stark being a prisoner of the Viet Cong. The movie version, written by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby, will be set in today's geopolitical climate.

Marvel President of Production, Kevin Feige said the filmmakers looked for the best actor to embody the character.

"The Marvel characters are not just about how high they jump or how fast they fly, they're about their character flaws," Feige said. "They're about their inner demons. They're about the struggles that they go through between being a man and being a hero."

Downey worked hard to get the role, getting in shape and even growing a goatee like the one Stark sports in the comic books.

"In every casting announcement we've done, people in their mind's eye have their own view of it and let us know about it. We're used to it," Feige said. "The point is, we looked at everybody, and we found the best person for the role. It's as confident a casting move as we've ever done. The proof will be in the pudding, but he is Tony Stark."

The $100 million-plus movie will be produced by Feige and Avi Arad. Executive producers are Michael Helfant, Ari Arad, Louis D'Esposito, Peter Billingsley and Favreau.

Marvel is now casting all supporting roles. Filming is slated to begin in February in Los Angeles.

Yeah I heard about this and while Im not a great fan of Robert Downey Jr. Im also not a huge fan of Tony Stark lol.

We have no idea what story arc they are going to use for the movie, but if they use one of the comon "tony stark is eatting away at himself from the inside" stories than i think Downey could pull it off. The only think that concerns me is that I dont really think Downey could pull off the super rich mega ultra huge powerfull rich genius.

That's brilliant news. Going to disagree with Yarr, and most of the internet is too, but Downey is one of the BEST actors of our time. Hands down. It's also great for a few other reasons. It also shows that it's not going to be a super hero movie with random jockish guy running around in a robotic jocksuit. Downey is an amazing character actor who will wear his shortcomings on his sleeve. Anyone see the parallel between Stark's alcoholism and Downey's drug addictions? The role could end up becoming more personal than any of his others.

This could very well be the best super hero movie yet. And since Iron Man has no real rogue's gallery (unlike Spider-Man, X-Men, Batman) and with the casting of the most gifted actors of our day, it seems Favreau isn't out to make your run of the mill super hero flik. Maybe we can forget all about his part in the Daredevil movie.

He might be able to pull off a tony stark. Stark isn't a perfect guy. He's an alcoholic, sleeps with lotta white women ( had to say that haha) cocky stuck up ( yarr should be tony stark omg!) pig headed and what else, umm he's also stubborn.

I actually think he isn't a bad choice at all.

.

Thats exactly what i noticed. Downey's real life issues and flaws, may be the perfect insipration to create a believeable Tony stark.

You jerk.

I really wasnt clear in my post, I was busy at work so I didnt explain myself.

I think it all depends on what story arc they use Reinheld. I mean they could easily do some Pro Iron man story and in that case Downey isnt going to play that great of a role. They could easily not write in the tons of problems he has with drugs and booze. Thats my fear, not the acting ability of Downey. The guy played Charlie Chaplin for crying out loud lol. I might not like him, but it doesnt mean I think hes a poor actor.

Like you I think its great to see them pick someone who isnt a Hollywood pritty rich boy. I could easily see them giving this role to someone based on how charasmatic he is.

The only real problem (and the problem i have with most comic->movies) is the voice. Im not sure he really sounds the same. Although they could do whatever they want to his voice in the suit to make him sound better anyway, in suit mode atleast.

I mean really, how can anyone be mad at this when we have real problems going on like Heath Ledger playing the Joker.

Robert Downey Jr. could play a festering turd on a hot summer day and make it an amazing performance.

And I'll agree. Heath Ledger is going to be very weird as the Joker. But.. depends on how they do it I guess.. Eh.

Should read The Killing Joke by Alan Moore. Probably the best Joker related Batman story ever written. Next to The Long Halloween and A Death in the Family.

Im a huge newbie in DC comics. I use to hate DC comic growing up. Only because all my friends made it feel like you had to pick if you were a DC or Marvel fan lol. God damn kids.

First thing I noticed, and that's all I know about iron man.

I just thought it's funny the article made it sound like growing a goatee would be a greater task than getting in superhero shape. Again agreeing with reinheld I'll see this for the downey factor, even knowing nothing about iron man or most comics for that matter.

Yeah I thought the Iron Man movie was either going to suck really bad or be good. Robert Downey Jr. though is a great actor and his experience with drug/alcohol addiction will definitely aid him in portraying Stark. This should be an interesting movie, well at least I hope it is. Everytime I see Favreau's name I think of Swingers, I love that movie haha.

WTF is with Heath Ledger playing Joker... man he is a letdown after Nicholson playing the Joker. Doesn't matter though, Michael Caine is still playing Alfred so its all good. I think they will have a hard time screwing up the next Batman.

I don't like Robert Downey Jr. I'm in no position to judge whether he is a good actor or not but he's annoyed me in everything he's ever done, and I don't see a lot of variety in the type of roles he's done. They may as well have casted ben stiller to play him, because in my eyes it's going to be the same kind of performance.

I feel sorry for Lemmiwinks. There would be no escape from Iron man's colon.

I dunno though. I think its an interesting casting choice, but I'm not a huge fan boy of either marvel or Downey.

I dunno, like I said I'm not qualified to judge the merit of one's acting, I mean sometimes when I'm really stoned I can pick out just how terrible some people are, or rather how terrible some people are in a particular role, but usually how terrible they are. Like heather graham(sp?). Mostly, I find actors being themselves over and over again just in different settings. The old proverb of <insert actor's name here> AS <insert actor's name here> IN <insert movie title here>. But apparantly, there are some people in here who're bonafied acting critics, so I'm just curious to know what makes him a good actor and what performances (if any) he did that were amazing.. aside from chaplin of course which he was actually pretty decent in, but only cuz he barely spoke the whole time.

I have a certain set of critera to judge whether or not someone is a good actor, as do most people. I'm just alot more pessimistic than most people so I don't like as many actors.

I have some exceptions though. Some actors are pretty awful but I still like them (i.e Keanu Reeves)

yeh I don't mind keanu either, I think it's cuz he's relatively attractive. However there are times when even he gets on my nerves.. like when he tries to convey some feeling (i think there was some scene he was supposed to be all upset about something in one of the matrix films and it just wasn't convincing at all) he's another actor who works well if he has as little lines as possible and never any scenes with any kind of emotion

The thing that saves him is that he realizes he's pretty much talentless so he chooses roles that fit him well (like a substance-d head in A Scanner Darkly :P). And I liked him in the Matrix. Considering Will Smith was almost cast as Neo I'm pretty happy with his performance.
