Quote: Letter from the Producer, VI (03/16/2011)
As you may have heard, northeastern Japan was recently struck by a devastating earthquake and tsunami. I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to all affected by this great tragedy. To do our part in the electricity conservation effort, we have temporarily taken our game servers offline. I apologize deeply for the inconvenience this causes all of you, and ask for your patience and understanding. I would also like to thank all of the players who have offered words of support and sympathy on the FFXIV forums. I made a brief post myself, but would like to take this opportunity to do so formally and report on the current state of the development team. Tokyo, where our development and operation teams are based, has suffered minimal damage from the earthquake and its after effects. We have confirmed the safety of all our team members, but there are those with family in the affected regions. Due to this, the concerns of the nuclear plants, and the ongoing aftershocks, we are not at our best. The planned blackouts in the Kanto region have disrupted public transportation, preventing many from even making it to work. In addition, our French and German localization staff have left Tokyo at the urging of their respective embassies. For these reasons, and to allow our staff to focus on their safety and that of their families, I have decided to make adjustments to the development schedule. We were working to release patches 1.16a and 1.17 by the end of March, but now anticipate a delay of one to two weeks. During this time, we will not only be making minor improvements, but also directing our efforts on laying the groundwork for future content. I had intended to announce this in a future letter, but we will release information regarding the Grand Companies of Eorzea (what were referred to as “public companies” in previous posts) just before patch 1.17 goes live. We are currently readying a page dedicated to this exciting new feature, and hope to have it up on the Lodestone shortly. Despite current conditions, we are doing all we can to release the patches and get you adventuring again as quickly as possible. Talk to you again soon! Sadly it seems that them posting their follow-up onto the forum has broken the automatic reply post. Oh well. I tried to merge these threads and it went arse up so I had to repost it, so your red highlighting is gone Whisp sorry. I'm also sort of worried about companies. They've been extremely vauge about it recently in such a way that I'm not sure that they're "guild-like linkshells" anymore. |

I'm starting to think they are, hopefully they're not like pvp factions where you pick a side and are sort of in competition with the opposing. I guess we don't have "teams" to be on anymore like the city state region points in 11. I read a post on the japanese forums from aplayer in the same region as where yoshi said his offices were in. The player stated that they are (and likely will be for a another month) doing rolling blackouts up to 8 hours a day devided every few hours up/down. Even if the servers were to come back online probably could only play a few hours in spurts unless se has some mega back up generator. But even if they did or didn't I can only imagine that'd be a tremendous strain on the servers. I feel sad, that the game was finally feeling like the production was rolling on track now just one more huge wrench in the spokes. Without the translations teams they're limited in what can be worked on, not to mention not having you're entire staff available. And of course all on top of all the tragedy all around I'm not sure what will go on or when the game can come back online hopefully can hear something soon. |

In terms of companies... I just hope that a person can only be a member of one. I'm not interested in having basically a second set of linkshells. People should have to leave one company to join another. As long as we get that, then I'm fine with it. |

"grand companies of eorzea" screams to me factions, or like nationalities in ffxi. this looks unpromising |

I'm very curious though as to why they've purposefully kept extremely mum about companies and grand companies for a while. All that we were ever promised was that they will be large groups, and what they will be called. Seems odd when every other feature is at least teased in some method. I wonder if they vagueness was to prevent people from predeciding sides. |
