Also, very importantly, failing a meld now only destroys the new piece of materia you were trying to attach, not the gear piece or any of the materia already attached to it.
Hmm... But wasn't destroying the gear half of the point? To stimulate the economy into purchasing or replacing high end gear and making multimelded items more rare/risky?
With the sounds of it, people won't be blowing through gear to create materia at the same rate they were in 1.0, as well as not destroying gear while attempting to meld. I wonder how this will balance out for the economy.
I also wonder as a trade-off, how rare the better materia will be now.
Overall, I really like a lot of the changes, really streamlines things quite a bit.
I'm really glad they're allowing us to exchange all of our existing materia (even affixed ones) for any other variety we wish. This is especially useful as the class/job stats have changed. So for instance, a melee no longer has any need for piety gear, but many of us probably had some previously expensive gear with piety materia on it. Which in ARR would have rendered that high end gear worthless if not for this trade-in system.
Exchanging powerful melded gear for darklight and such seems a bit much though. The people who had that gear on hand aren't exactly the crowd that really needed that kind of freebie thrown at them.

oh well.
