I've read about this kinda stuff in the past and it seems like a good idea.

170Mbps through an electrical socket demoed

Matsushita showed off an exceptionally high-speed Internet through an ordinary electrical socket at a Japanese trade fair

Matsushita Electronics has claimed a breakthrough in powerline broadband by running an Internet connection through an ordinary electrical socket, using a new chip. At a tradeshow in Japan on Thursday the company demonstrated a network capable of running at 170Mbps over the electrical network.

Companies have been able to demonstrate data running on powerlines before, but only at speeds up to around 10Mbps and with strict limitations on the length of the cables.

The main problem is that the signal will dissipate through the cables over any distance more than about 150m.

Matsushita, which trades as Panasonic, told the Associated Press that by using new products with the new chip embedded in them, users can access a broadband network simply by plugging into the electrical network.

The aim behind Matsushita's strategy, as it demonstrated at the show, is to use the electrical network as an alternative route for an Internet connection, and also as a replacement for Wi-Fi. The company pointed out that while almost all houses have electrical power not all have broadband, or even an Internet connection, so by using this system anyone can access, download and watch high-definition movies and other content in any room in the house.

Though this is a grand notion, with a good cause. I have used this type of technology for my HTI+ prep training. This would be a beautiful replacement for Wi-FI. [rant] Yes, I HATE Wi-Fi with a passion. [/rant]

There was a guy who said he could do this a few years back. He had everyone fooled and scammed millions out of huge investors. theres a lot of things that complicate this technology so dont expect to see it replace wifi or anything in the near future.

Its a great idea but with the amount of complications that come up, its not all that practical.

I am well aware of how complexed this technology is. It is only able to send info 30 times a second and reseave 30 times a second ( US Voltage: 120V, 60Hz, only able the transmit at the peeks of the sine wave). The technology is around to control lamps and such, any on/off/dimmer items, but 170MBps I still about 5+ years away....

this has actually been out for like 8+ years, its really expensive though and doesn’t have too many applications, only places ive seen it mostly is military, i know at USAFA they use this and ive also seen some small private government contracting companies use it
