hey all, not sure how many of you are/were closet hip-hop fans. Truth be told, it was about all i listened to from 7th to around 9th-10th grade. Then I discovered classic rock, alternative, new wave, emo, punk, ska, hardcore etc etc and my tastes broadened a lot into those genres.

I just today started putting together a list of songs in an effort to make a definitive mix (or several) of the type of hip-hop that i used to be into as a kid.

I was wondering if there's anyone else out there who knows, remembers, likes/liked these songs, and if you can suggest any other songs that I may have forgot (cuz lord knows there must be a ton).

Back in tha Day - Ahmad
Whatchu Want - Nine
Passin Me By - Pharcyde
Catch a Bad One - Del the Phunky Homosapien
Shook Ones pt.3 - Mobb Deep
Got'cha Open - Black Moon
Similak Child/The Choice Is Yours - Black Sheep
Check the Rhyme/Buggin' Out/Scenario - Tribe Called Quest
C.R.E.A.M/Method Man/Protect' Ya Neck/Tearz/Shame on a Nigga - Wu Tang Clan
I Used to Love H.E.R. - Common
Nappy Heads - Fugees
Warning/Juicy/Unbelievable - Notorious B.I.G.
Nuthin' but a G' Thang - Dr. Dre
Bring the Pain/Release Yo' Delf - Method Man
Get At Me Dog/Damien/Stop Bein Greedy - DMX
Brand New Flava - Craig Mack
Tonight's Da Night - Redman
Come Clean - Jeru the Damaja
Mind Playin Tricks On Me - Geto Boys
How I Could Just Kill A Man/Hand On the Pump - Cypress Hill
Shamrocks and Shenanigans - House of Pain
You Know How We Do It - Ice Cube
Punks Jump Up ta Get Beat Down - Brand Nubian
They Want Efx - Das Efx
360 Degrees - Grand Puba
Mad Izm - Channel Live
1-800-Suicide/Diary of a Madman - Gravediggaz
Throw Ya Gunz - Onyx
Crewz Pop - Da Youngstas
Ghetto Bastard - Naughty by Nature
To Kill A Hooker/One Less Bitch/Findum, Fuckem, and Flee/Automobile/She Swallowed It/I'd Rather Fuck You - NWA
Something's Got to Give - Beastie Boys

haha dude! those songs are fucking classic! I should post lyrics

EDIT: Oh yeah, I should note that when there are slashes... that means there are more than 1 song from that artist that I thought were amazing (see notorious b.i.g. and wu tang clan as examples) so while that does look funny and weird/creepy all strung together it's supposed to be read seperate.

Not much a hip-hop fan, however, there are some notable things that I would add to the list.

Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat) - Digable Planets (Pretty much anything off their first album.)
Children's Story - Slick Rick
Slam - Onyx
Me, Myself, & I - De La Soul

Recently I've listening to real old school hip-hop

"The Breaks" by Kurtis Blow

"The Message" by Grandmaster Flash

"Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang. (I prefer the full 14min version but w/e)

those songs remind me of a special i saw on vh1 a couple days ago. I never really got too into old school shit, i knew some slick rick, run dmc. Those are all classic tracks tho, that anyone who knows anything about hip-hop should know. I think old schhol is way more authentic and interesting than the majority of shit out now though. I dunno, I feel kind of awkward and embrassed talking about hip-hop cuz i'm a white guy from the suburbs lol

If you look at the credits to hip hop nowadays you'll find the best hip hip music is sampled. It not original anymore and just taken from the the greatest elements of soul, disco, funk, hip hop from the 70s, 80s, and early 90s. the only reason I listen to current music is to find the sample they used and get the original recording (I work in a Fine Arts Library so we have music that dates waay back).

btw If anyone learns anything about hip-hop from VH1, then it's just a sad world we live in. :-(

yeh i totally agree about that, a lot of artists/producers now are even re-using songs that have already been sampled previously.. how do you sample a sample? honestly... case in point: black moon's "got ya open" the original sample is from a barry white song, tho the name of the track escapes me atm, and how many times have you heard that beat used? I think Mad Lion had a really cool track with that sample back in the 90s.. i believe, i'm not sure. There was a lot of DJs putting acapella tracks to different music and getting really awesome results, i think i used to have a mix that had TLC's "creep" over the deep cover beat (another song I forgot from the mix)... and that was some hot shit. Anything I know is from being some paper ganster when i was in middle school and that's it, VH1 didn't teach me shit, but it was cool to see grandmaster flash, curtis blow and all those old school icons performing and being appreciated by today's biggest names in rap.. it was like some award ceremony, I'm guessing you didn't see it lol.

Nah. I haven't been watching TV alot. Women, School, and work take up my time.

Oh man, I just ran into my New Edition collection. "Candy Girl" "Cool it Now".

I dont understand how they can get their voice to that pitch back in the 80s..
