Hopefully Whisp or someone will post here.

I downloaded Dream Theater's Glass Prison and I really got into it...

...until that guy started singing.

What great music, but the singer really is mismatched. I hate playing the first 3 minutes over and over, so does the band have an instrumentals I could download with the same sort of absolute fury the Glass Prison has?

Ponuh Dream Theater minus vocalist is Liquid Tension Experiment. It is instrumental music with all the badasses from Dream Theater minus their annoying lead singer although it does sound a little different from their regular material but it is still good stuff imo.

Here are some cool DT instrumentals

Album: When Dream and Day Unite, "Ytse Jam"

Album: Scenes from a Memory, "Overture 1928" and "The Dance of Eternity"

Album: Awake, "Erotomania"

There are some more, but these are the ones I can think of. I highly recommend getting the Liquid Tension Experiment albums. There are two of them, and the second one is the best. Download the song called "Acid Rain" off the 2nd LTE album, it'll blow you away.

It's the guitarist, drummer, and keyboard player from DT, but with a different bass player.

okay so i'm guessing other people have bitched about this singer before?

I think his voice is too clear for thet type of music. It needs more grogginess. Distortion doesn't seem to help it either

Personally I like his voice, but I could see how others could dislike it.

Ok, I'm probably the biggest DT nut on this forum, heh.

Instrumentals-
YTSE jam, Erotomania, Hells Kitchen, Overture 1928, Dance of Eternity, Overture (From six degrees of inner turbulence, disc 2) and Stream of Consciousness.

LTE stuff is really good, it's the current line up from DT minus the bassist, John Myung (replaced by Tony Levin from ... um King Crimson?) and no lyrics. It's slightly different because it emcompasses a much broader array of musical styles in one album as where DT albums are generally written in the same style. I can understand why you don't like James LaBrie's voice, but I mean a lot of prog bands have the same style of singing- look at Geddy Lee from Rush. It's just something you have to get used to. If you're in to DT for the music you can ignore James' Singing. Also, if you want to check out some of his less wailing moments, check out the earlier stuff, like A Change of Seasons, stuff off Awake, stuff like that.

ok I'm done before this turns into like a 15 paragraph post. haha

Pick up the G3 with John Petrucci jamming with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani from a couple of years ago. A change of seasons and Awake were my favorite Dream Theater albums. Geddy Lee>James Labrie , he wrote alot of Rush's music and besides singing he is the bass player(damn good one too).

dude, yea i got "A Change of Seasons" first... i was blown away by the coordination of the guitarist and drummer. but when the vocals kicked in, i was like "heh wtf is this?" but after a while, i kinda got used to it on that album. then about 3 years later I got my second Dream Theater cd, called "Awake." it's pretty much their heaviest album. but the vocals were still kinda strange, like nothing i had heard before. well, kind of like Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin. when i looked at it that way, i felt more comfortable with the vocals. then after a while of listening to Dream Theather, and listening to my brother (a good singer) talk about who really is talented and who isn't, i grew to realize James LaBrie is actually an extremely talented singer. i would definitely suggest these two albums for you to become more acclimated with his vocals: "Metropolis Part II: Scenes from a Memory" and "Images & Words." Those are two essential albums for just about any rock fan, in my opinion. Keep in mind my fav bands are like Slayer, Pantera (R.I.P. Dimebag), Machinehead, and i really like stuff like Deicide, Death, Rotting Christ, etc. But I still have an immense respect for Dream Theater even though they are in a different genre (the genre that includes Rush, King Crimson, Yes, Fates Warning, etc.). They are hands down the most impressive band I have ever heard. I am, i guess you could say, in perpetual awe of them. lol.

ok but if you really don't like James LaBrie's vocals, or you just can't get past the fact that he looks weird lol... I suggest Liquid Tension Experiment 2. the second cd in my opinion is much better than the first. it's much faster and more metal-ish.

i'm not a huge fan of hard metal, but i think dream theater is a nice setting.

I downloaded "acid rain" from Liquid Tension Experiment 2 and was quite impressed by it.

Anways, the vocalist himself seems like he's got the pipes and talent, but the tone of his voice just seems very mismatched. I'm going to download a bunch of their stuff soon, but what are the top 5 songs of theirs i should download?

Hm... Top 5 DT songs.

1. Change of Seasons
2. Dance of Eternity
3. Caught in a Web
4. Lines in the Sand
5. Eh... I'd have to say get both The Glass Prison and This Dying soul, one is a continuation of the other.

It took me like 5 mins to come up with that list because I couldn't say download everything. haha

I am no expert by any means, but I really liked Caught in a Web and Space Dye Vest.
I only have two CD's and I don't like "Train of Thought" very much. Its not bad, just didn't make it into the rotation of my CD player lol.
I guess the reason I like that second one is cause I like stuff a little slower sometimes, anyways....
SS, Whisp and TS talked me into trying these guys out (mostly SS)

THANX GUYS!!!!

yea i have tried and tried but not been able to get "into" the new one.

IMAGES AND WORDS
and
METROPOLIS PART 2
are like the coolest

metropolis part 2 is what is called a "concept album," from track 1 to track 12 its a continuous storyline that develops, and the transition from one track to the next is without pause. its very cool.

Thanks for the lists guys, I'll starting downloading those

Okay I'm listening to some songs now...I'll write some notes

"The Ytse Jam": The beginning sounds sort of like a song from Spinal Tap :D. Really awesome song, it seems to have an old feel to it, like an old organ playing it or something. There's definately alot of thought put into this.

"Dance of Eternity": OMG it reminds me of Chrono Trigger, which scores major browny points for me personally. It sounds like boss music. This is really really good. It's very Rush-like. I like this one ALOT. Like rush it strings what seem like random motifs with a unified theme. And some Bluegrass in the middle! Marvelous :D Wow, I'm surprised I hadn't heard of these guys before, they're freaking amazing.

"Metropolis": I'm intrigued to begin with...It's been a good 30 seconds and i'm not sure what will happen. wow it's become really broad and together yet it still displays their musicianship individually. Now it seems to be in a march. The singer just started, yet it's mild. It seems like it fits more on this song...alot more..Just in time...I like it alot...Why isn't this band huge? It's disgusting that this much talent can stay somewhat underground...sweet, it just sped up, it seems that there's a solo going on between the guitar and keyboards simultaneously...definately alot of Neil Peart in this drummer's style. This is furious just like Glass Prison. Wow.

24 is on, i'll get to the others later. Stunning stuff. From the looks of their website they've had pretty good success. Hm, surprised I've never heard of them.

Because we live in a world where Britney Spears and Ashley Simpson are considered "talented".

BTW, if you are just looking for some really kick ass instrumentals, try these from Metallica (you prolly already know them though)

Orion-Track 7 on Master of Puppets
Anastesia(Pulling Teeth)-Track 5 on Kill 'em All
Call of Ktulu-Track 8 on Ride the Lightning.

imo Orion is one of the best pieces of music I have EVER heard. I am glad it doesn't have lyrics, cause that would take away from the music lol.
