i just realized something. old people right now dont really play video games, but when "our" generation gets to retirement age, with all the free time on our hands, we are gonna be playing video games like 24/7 haha...

i wonder what video games will be like in 2050. what improvements will be made? maybe it will be something that is like hardwired into our brain, giving us electrical impulses that make us think we're running, jumping, smelling things, etc. MMORPGs will probably be the genre that leads to real life simulations, where the world is as vast as the planet earth, and the economy is a living thing, and you can own your own shop and go into work everyday and sell axes to adventurers, etc. Video games will become the land where we can do whatever we want and not worry about the consequences. or maybe it will be the other way around... I broke my leg by jumping off a building irl? who cares! my video game leg is still fine

what do you guys think about our generation @ retirement and the state of video games when our real freetime finally comes around?

I think we'll end up playing games of some sort, but I don't think it'll be the current stuff then. I've met so many young ppl that don't know about all the cool games, movies or tv shows that were around in my childhood. Kids nowadays are raised on 3d games and graphics so real you'd think it was a movie. I was raised on non-CGI games and movies. I think the older we get, the less inclined we are to accept the new stuff based on our growth with the "old" stuff. Does that make any sense? It's kinda like your parents liking a certain type of music because that's what they grew up with. They don't particularly care for the music you listen to.

At the pace MMO's are going. Its possible to see a huge base of "older" players. But thats only considering if MMO's evolve for the better. I can see myself playing videogames. MMO's to be honest, i don't think so. Only if the right people are playing.

I think MMOs are taking over a healthy amount of the industry.

they'll keep developing more expensive games and consoles that give the most "life like" experience, but eventually someone will come along and essentially re-issue/re-market an old atari like console for mad cheap and people will scoop them up as if we haven't been down that road.. at least that's what i see.. just a constant cycle of reusing old themes when new ones become too expensive or impractical

Chances are us older folks are going to end up living online more than irl if we can develop the machines to mirror reality. Should be interesting to see what happens, haha.

In 2050, I'll still be playing FFXI, and I'll be 3.5k til lvl 67.

i often think of this subject. looking at my parents and grandparents and how they dont play games but do things they enjoyed when they were younger, like fishing, woodworking, etc. I can definitely see myself playing tons of games in the future...FF anthology #1-50 all on one disk, including all the online ones.

Although perhaps by 2050 we will be able to actually jack into a network and play virtual reality games through a port drilled into our spines...perhaps that will be the key eternal life, rather than dieing we end up entering a realm such as Vanadiel....which continues forever as our physical bodies remain stored in stasis somewhere. I'd do it...beats the shit out of spending your final days in a seniors home...

They'll take the brains from our skulls and place them into cyborg nazi death gorillas. But we'll think that we're playing FFXXII-7 LiveOnline.

It is an interesting question, that's for sure. Adults playing video games is kind of a foreign idea. It certainly was when I was growing up. Now that I'm 24, though, I see a lot of people my age playing video games.

My generation grew up with video games. I was like in the 1st grade, or so, when the NES came out. My parents had nothing like the NES, and my grandparents most certainly didn't. Because they didn't grow up with them, they probably aren't likely to use them. It's also why you don't see a lot of real computer-savvy older people. If your grandparents do have a computer, it's probably an iMac, and even then they don't really understand most of it.

As for whether or not we will continue to play them... I don't think video games are going anywhere. Your ability to play them, however, I think is mostly affected by your personal relationships. If you hook up with a guy/girl who also enjoys games, or tolerates them, then I'm sure you'll continue to play the latest and greatest. But if (s)he doesn't want you sitting on your ass playing games everyday, then I dunno.

Personally, I think it'd be sweet to hook up with some cute gamer chick, but I think you'd pretty much need to resort to online means to find such. At least once you're out of the education system. "Hey, do you like video games?" probably isn't the best pickup line at a bar.

i know, but if you compare all the old folks' generations of the past, they are quite similar. the generation before ours is going to be the most openminded and educated old folks generation, which distinguishes them from past generations. but our generation as it gets old will be the old children of the computer age
