hi,

i figured id post this here seeing as i was already browsing this forum and I know many of you use PCs.

i'm a retarded mac user here. i just installed Windows XP Pro on my Virtual PC and I can't figure out how to disable certain programs from auto-starting. Where the hell do you go in windows to do this? I looked all over control panel, checked properties of the App and even did a search in help and support hoping to get a nice little walkthrough, no such luck.

My problem is Limewire...when i startup windows Limewire starts too and slows everything down, I shutdown the app. and 5 secs later it auto starts again, and so on. The Limewire Icon also keeps appearing in that tiny menu (not sure what Windows users call it, Taskbar???) next to where the time is. Anyways, I right-click on the icon and hit exit and it stops reloading but I really just want the program to stop loading when I turn on windows...please help me if you can.

on Mac doing this is as easy as opening the system folder, going to another folder called startup items and removing the file. I hope there is a similarly easy way to do it in XP too.

Open up Start Menu and go to the Run Program

Type in MSConfig and Hit Enter.

It should take you to your System Configuration menu and go to the Start up tab and the end. It should give you a list to all the programs that start up when you boot your Windows. Proceed to find the Limewire app and disable it. You'll have to restart and it shouldn't load up again.

er, what would you say if i told you I did what you said above but Limewire wasn't in there...it wasn't found under any of the tabs actually.

should I go to General, tick Selective Startup and un-tick Load Startup Items??? so, confusing for my simple mac-mind, lol.

lol I wouldn't touch any of that. I'm actually an average joe like yourself. Since you can't find it I would suggest disabling it by going into Limewire. Go to the Tools >> Options.

From there go to the Advanced >> System Startup. It should give you an option to disable it from start up.

ok, im awake again. i looked under Advanced in Limewire Options and guess what?? The box for Auto-start is already un-ticked. So, I have no clue why it is starting up on its own, not only at OS startup but also as soon as I shutdown... :( :?

Next Step:
1) Un-install Limewire.
2) Go to your nearest CD retailer.
3) Spend money on CDs.
4) Piracy has failed you. ; ; (I don't have any more advice to give you lol)

You obviously have something else running on the system that is automatically starting Limewire back up. Windows doesn't do this itself, so you have some program running that's doing it.

First step is Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and goto the Processes tab. Sort the list by Username and take a list of everything running on your computer under your own Username, you can pretty much ignore everything running as SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, etc.

Number one rule of keeping your Windows PC nice and clean. If you do not know what a process is, it should not be there! If this means finding out what some of them are, then so be it.

Go down the list and check each of your Processes one by one and decide if you actually need it running or not. You can usually guess what a lot of them are by it's abbreviated name. IEXPLORE.EXE is obviously Internet Explorer, TASKMGR.EXE is Task Manager, EXPLORER.EXE is Windows Explorer, etc.

If you don't know what something is by it's name, punch the name into google, including the .EXE and take a look at the first result that pops up. It will usually explain what it is and why it's there. If you don't want it running, then right click it on Task Manager and "End Process" to close it. Bare in mind that we really want to close everything that isn't critical to your computer to run. I don't care if closing REALSCHED.EXE means you wont get the latest information and updates for RealPlayer, you don't want it there.

After closing something, wave your Mouse around the System Tray to get it to update, and see which icon disappears, if any. That will give you an indication of what you just closed if you didn't really know. Ideally, you're going to close everything except EXPLORER.EXE, TASKMGR.EXE (You're using it). Bare in mind that the majority of programs running under your own username are perfectly safe to close. Something might sound like your Virus Scanner, but if it's running under your own username then it's probably nothing more than a tray icon.

Once you purge the entire list of stuff running under your own username (Don't touch anything running as SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, NETWORK SERVICE, etc) then it's time to change the system so none of that crap keeps coming back.

Open your Start Menu, hit Run, and type "Regedit" and hit Enter. Using the list to the side, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. This is a list of programs that run when your computer boots up. Unless you can see anything in here that's important (Virus Scanner is usually the only one) then get rid of it. You don't need Quicktime scanning for updates or Nero checking if you still have a CD Writer, waste of time and resources.

Once you do that, then goto: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. , which is the same key, but under the CURRENT_USER hive instead of the LOCAL_MACHINE hive. And clear this list out too. There really shouldn't be anything under this one. After this reboot and see if that's not only fixed your problem but made your whole ssytem cleaner and faster as a whole.

That's a pretty basic run down. If you want to go further thanit's not much you can do manually probably. You'd need to find a little tool called "Hijack This" (put it in Google) and run it; It needs no installation, it's just a small EXE file. That will list all the browser hooks, search bars, add-ons, and all that nonsense all tied into Internet Explorer.

PS: Everyone should do this. If you can get into the habit of keeping an eye on Task Manager and what is actually running on your system every day or two, then you'll usually catch crap self-installing itself onto your system before it starts to cause trouble.

yep Ket is right, another thing can happen is virus can also run in system too so watchout for those cuzz,

It could be hacking your pc getting your info about your real life such as your bank Account numbers, Credits Accounts, your SS numbers, Driver lic., Email (which can auto send virus to them and hack them as well), your Games ID login and Password like FFXI,WoW,EQ2 and more.

so checking your system is what you will know that you dont want running in background is safer than Firewall alone.

wow, thanks.

that was very helpful. i have solved the problem. it really made me appreciate the simplicity of my Macintosh. i won't be using Windows too much because as it is emulated it obviously isn't up to par with the Mac it's installed on. I just needed Windows so my wife can install her JP version of Office and practice for school. VPC was a much better alternative to dishing out the extra cash for another computer, lol.
