Dead man on subway might have ridden around for hours

January 20, 2006, 10:23 AM EST

NEW YORK (AP) _ A man was found dead on a subway car near the start of the morning rush hour, authorities said, raising the possibility that his lifeless body rode the train for several hours overnight.

Eugene Reilly, 64, of Brooklyn, a U.S. Postal Service employee, was discovered Thursday at 7:11 a.m., said James Anyansi, spokesman for NYC Transit. Reilly's body was found in the last car of a northbound Q train in the 14th Street-Union Square station, Anyansi said Friday.

The train was evacuated while emergency medical technicians were called to the scene. Authorities reported there were no signs of foul play or any injuries. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of death and exactly how long Reilly had ridden aboard the train after his death.

Reilly typically worked a 4 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. shift as a mail handler at the Morgan Processing and Distribution Center, just a short walk from the Q train stop at 34th Street. If he left work at the usual time, and apparently died during the 35-minute trip to Brooklyn, Reilly could have spent six hours aboard the train before he was discovered.

In June 1999, a passenger on a No. 1 train shared his ride with commuters for about five hours before anyone noticed he was dead. The man appeared to be sleeping, with his eyes closed and his head bowed.
