i think sleep mode is best for short time, and shutdown is for long time. cant explain why, its just the whole power saving crap,

one thing that is bad though, is to leave it on when you have a screen saver, everytime it loads, it eats up memory. and it is an open window for that unwanted stuff.

lol that screensaver thing was only a thing way back in the start of personal computers. now you can put up high quality screen savers and lag your computer!

just turn your computer off lol, i think you gotta let your processor cool every once and awhiel

but thats just my opinion

I never turn off my computer unless I'll be gone for more than two days (So about once a month?) I think the fan in the back of the case finally cut out. I need to see if I can fix it.

It really depends on if you have any programs that tend to have "memory leaks", meaning that they don't keep good track of what RAM they allocate. Unless you have a utility that can recover "lost" RAM, you'll need to reboot every once in a while or you'll start seeing performance drops.

If you do decide to keep your computer on for longer periods of time, be sure to set your power settings to turn off your hard drives after a while. HDDs do tend to wear out after a while, so having them spin down after a certain amount of idle time is always a good idea.

Oh, and if you happen to use Firefox, never leave it running overnight. It's been known to leak memory like a sieve on occasion, especially when left open for long periods of time, so if you're not browsing, close it down. :)

I leave my computer on 24/7 except maybe once a month. when it's idling all night it runs Winamp and AIM and whatever it normally runs, and FFXI occasionally during the weekend if I pass out on the couch.

about turning off harddrives, if you set that, does anything happen to what's already up? like Winamp and AIM and maybe FFXI

In the end, it depends: If your system can handle it, leave it on all the time, and use the sleep/power save modes. There is a studied that found that you use more power if you did a cold boot every time you needed to use your computer. However, in the end, it depends on how often you use your computer. Judging by you being of the computer gen., them I would wager that you have it on for quite a while. As long as you dont over-work your computer (too much), then leaving it on all the time wont be an issue. As for the RAM issue, limit the number of programs with memory leak issues, however, just warm-rebooting your computer clears your RAM.

If your computer can't handle running at 100% CPU usage, 24/7, then you didn't get what you paid for. All computers should be able to handle that; it's how they're designed.

Of course if you're looking to actually save some money on your electricty bill, by all means turn it off.

I turn it off cause the fan can get annoying, and it can save some electricity. But if I've to let it run for many days (download), I'm not giving it any rest time for sure.

I never turn off my pc unless I am not going to be here for long time.

Anyhow I just setup my screen saver to turn monitor to stand-by and HDD off when I go to bed. I never use screen saver at all. but if I am AFK then I use monitor stand-by.

That depends on your program thats running well FFXI I would not let the HDD go off just to save power cuzz that game is always using HDD no matter what. unless your going to let your cpu go 0% all the time then I would.

now remember your CPU fan have fail-safe setup when fan fails to run or stop your computer would auto shutdown to protect your CPU from overheating. also computer are made to last 24 hours and 7 days a week. only thing I shutdown is when I need to work on the computer or upgrading or cleanup the bunny-dust that gets buildup so dont forget to clean it out or it will short out your computers.

One time when I was with my brother-in-law that teach me how to build my own computer so I used to help him build computer for customer that hire him and he networks also. Anyhow we got to customer to do some networking and upgrade. There was only one server that does all the network and when we opened it .......O_O; it was full of dust that I cant beleive it was full of dust that never been open or touched. I wish I took a picture of this but didnt have camera. lucky this thing been running for a long time without ever short out.

Actually, it wont do a single thing if FFXI is running. HDD power-down settings only take effect when the computer is entirely idle. As in NO HDD activity at all for the specified amount of time.

So setting your HDD to power down after an hour of idle time wont affect FFXI or anything else you do, really.

Oh, and powering down the HDD has very little to do with saving electricity. It's about saving the HDD. HDDs only last a certain amount of time... High-use drives last anywhere from 4 years to 8 years, possibly even less if you have a crap drive. They're like lightbulbs, they just sort of burn out after a while.
