I'm listening to Live right now. Throwing Copper is THE album of the 90s as far as I'm concerned.

Jagged Little Pill is another, I guess. There's alot of good shit that came out of the 90s. (Images and Words ;p)

I don't like Death Metal either. Maybe it's an attribute of homosexuality and womanhood lol.

i was just thinking about how many times i've experienced this:

"what kinda music do you like?"
(me)-"metal and rock"
"oh, i hate that stuff."
"hmm, well i like it. what do you like?"
"rap, r&b, pop, dance, you name it i like it."

how come the hate is always flowing in that direction? i never hear this:

"what kinda music do you like?"
"rap, dance, stuff like that."
"man, i hate that shit."

its like, in public, its ok to like rap, talentless music, etc. and its cool to say you hate metal. maybe its just where i live, atlanta. this is a very rap/r&b place.

That's probably only your personal experience of not being as judgemental as others are to you. I think alot of metal is really talentless too. And as great as I'm told Opeth is. Well, Jesus Christ. It's unlistenably terrible. "ARGHGHG I AM THE ARGHGHG GHOST OF PERDITION" and he sings it out of time. What the fuck?

edit: And my beef doesn't actually end there. It's totally monotone. It's like he's singing through a darth vader mask. Seriously. It feels like the fucking most terrible shit on the planet. Fuck. Growling is such shit. What the fuck. Fuck.

Metal is my favorite music from looking at my CD collection and MP3s.
Metal and Punk actually fit under the Rock unbrella as well lol.. Dream Theater is more Progressive Metal.. but still Metal itself is an offshoot of Rock... which is a bastard watered down child of the Blues (where is the Diabolos in Musica "white man's blues?" Pentatonic vs Blue scale).. Blues is a weaksauce subgenre of Jazz (the only true original American musical artform that is still influenced by Classical lol)...Well that is from what I remember. Might be wrong somewhere in there maybe. That is why I like all the above to differing degrees most likely. Well since people generally gravitate to music they have some sort of familiarity with.

Oh and I listen Metal in various forms for the vast majority of my time, but listen to a mixed bag of other shit as well. I listen to some rock, jazz, classical, punk and other stuff. I value musicians that can perform original material accurately in a live setting rather than relying to production tricks/technology to make themselves sound good.

I do however like a few novelty bands as I call them basically due to comedic value and/or nostalgia. I do not listen to dance music... and would not outside a club setting.. I really fucking hate clubs/raves too. Did that scene for a while just for the girls and drugs. Liked a few electronica acts.. but I would not buy any of their stuff now. I hate Pop and Country music more than any other form of music. Bluegrass on the other hand can be quite insane and kickass... well some of the stuff. I tend to lose interest in bands and music pretty fast and move on to the next thing quickly.... only hang onto acts I had good experiences with seeing live for a extended period.

I listen to basically anything, Beck, Radiohead, The Strokes, White Stripes, Sigur Ros are probably my favorite bands.

however, I love punk music. I love the style, I love all of it except what punk you hear on the radio (although I do like some greenday, but i dont catigorize them as punk, i look at them as rock).

One of my good friends and the people who I hung out with during high school all went to punk shows every weekend and I went with them. Local punk stuff mind you.

hahaha that is probably my favorite Opeth CD... well I like all of them to some degree.... they are disappointing live however since they can't play all of their songs live to their full potential. Well since they mix in like some insanely high amount of guitar tracks sometimes.... 3 guitarists even with chorus and tons of effects to make them sound more full can't even cover the supposed 36 tracks of guitar on one track (forget the name). Still an awesome band. Great musicianship and changing of time signature and they can actually improvise songs live.. which is a plus lol.

Ponuh probably can't understand or get past the initial problem with what I call "dirty" or distorted vocals (growling, screaming in pitch with the music).... it is not really singing but vocals that are clean.. as in not naturally distorted versus using your voice to naturally distort your own vocal timbre. Well kinda like a distortion pedal on a guitar... but some of the more decent vocalists actually aren't monotone (bad death/black metal vocalists are monotone and/or use digital effects like a crutch ie: Dani Filth's no talent ass). The no talent assclowns make others look bad to be honest. Hell my initial problem with Death Metal was the vocals... then I finally "got it". I can't say I totally appreciate them as much as some people, but I can enjoy a few of them.

yeah Opeth's metal albums kinda suck, but Damnation, which is no where near a metal album, is great. the lead singer has a great voice, but not a great metal voice.

I listen to whatever makes me feel good. I don't care what genre it is. Aski Mil, she makes fun of me all the time for some of the shit I listen to... Sometimes it's pop and sometimes it's hardcore metal. lol

I never listened to country but to be honest I would if any of it did anything for me. I feel like I can appreciate anything that takes talent.(read: has a good guitarist with a good tone :P)

For the most part, though, the CDs in my car are either Punk or Hardcore along with a few select jazz, blues, and pop shit. lol

I have it, Whisp. My friend tried to get me to go to Opeth with him and gave me the CD, thinking I'd think that Opeth is a mellow band.

Blackwater Park is more listenable for the unitiated to Opeth and Dream Theater is far from mellow lmao.

I'm not disputing that. Dream Theater is much more mellow.

This thread is getting out of hand. I think that everyone needs to go listen to Metropolis Pt. 1.

THAT is the essence of music.

I would hardly consider that song mellow either lol.. Metropolis might be a great song and all, but is far from mellow. Opeth has its more listenable and calm parts also.. still silence etc. Opeth builds tension with their music and has dynamics that go from quiet to loud.

I wouldn't consider either band to be mellow in the least. I have listened to every song DT has played.. and some are more subtle and calm than others, just would not define them as "mellow" music. They can be quite heavy when they want to be... well mellow isn't really a musical term btw.

DT is more impressive live due to Petrucci actually writing his music for something that he can alone reproduce in a live setting.. while the ridiculousness of a few Opeth songs can't be reproduced if there were 3 Opeth guitarists... and not even 2 Petruccis lol. Just so many layers of guitar tracks... mostly studio smoke and mirror tricks to be honest.
