The past few sundays a of my buddies and I have been making soap. We're doing the cold-process version, so it takes a real long time. So far we've probably made 100 bars of soap and we're hoping to keep it rolling and get to 1000 before scool starts so we can hand them out to people.

Have any of you guys ever done this? We change the recipe a little everytime but it never seems to work all the time. Today we were blending the mixture for like 2 hours and it never traced (A term basically meaning it's ready to be poured and let to dry). So we added some more Lye mixture and some lotion and it traced in like 45 minutes. It's a lot of fun though, we can carve our own designs in them and shape them how we want.

Fight Club Style 8)

We poured some lye on our hands to see how it felt. Needless to say....it hurt, but not as bad as I thought. I coulda kept it on for longer, but I already have a big bump on my hand from it and it's getting bigger everyday, hope it doesn't scar... it just looks like a big pimple.

hmmm photobucket is being stupid. I'll try it again. We made the soap so we could hand some out to freshmen when they come to school next week. Also we're going to be using it as a form of currency for our version of Assassins that we'll be hosting on ASU campus. If you don't know what Assassins is, wikipedia it. We've already done 2 test runs last semester and we just re-wrote the rules and stuff and we're hoping to get at least 500 kids to play this semester. Then maybe 1000+ by next semester.

Better than sitting at home playing FFXI eh?

you don't need currency.... we're just trying some new things out. I actually think it's a rather silly idea and I think we should just hand the soap out. No one's gonna wanna bother with soap as currency in Assassins. But I could be wrong, maybe it'll be a huge success. But Reid (in the pic) was real gung-ho about making 1000+ bars of soap and trying it out, so here we are lol

There are sites all over the internet and they include mixture ratios and stuff like that. But the basics are

Pour Lye into water, stir until dissolved.

Melt lard

Mix dissolved Lye into melted lard.

Stir until you reach "trace."

Trace can take up to 5 hours.

Let dry for 2 weeks.

If you do decide to make soap be careful and read up. Lye is pretty intense, there are some temerature's you'll wanna take into account otherwise you might get some unexpected exploisions lol

You know what you can do with 1000 bars of soap? Get 1000 long socks, put the soap in the socks, and beat freshmen with them. Thats a good way to say 'welcome to college'.
