"supose to" being the key words. From what ive read this patch stops people from runing in window mode and it also makes it harder for people to do any packet sniffing and also makes it harder for people to run macro programs in the back ground.

I can only hope it fix's the bot problems with camping HNMs

I also heard that programs like the Windower have now stopped working. For once they have actually changed the "pol.exe" file, instead of just the "polmain.dll" file (or something like that.) They could have made those changes on purpose, or the windowing tools may just have broken because of slight code changes and will take 5 minutes to fix.

As for botting, things I have heard:

The West Sarutabaruta cliffs this morning consisted of: 3 Fishermen, and 7 dead bodies. (Hurray for adding monsters in the newbie zones.)

Well at least I can put back my Insect ball mule in Rabao to sell to all the Moat Carp-turned Rusty-turned back to Moat Carp fishers.

Yeah I was talking to a few Programming majors in class a couple days ago that mentioned "packet sniffing" programs. I guess that would explain a lot about how they seem to know not only the time of the spawn but the location as well. If that is the secret Gana was talking about... I can't say I'm suprised...

Is gana LS that bad T_T' Anyway I like to do a lot of research just to be aware of certain things. The best voke bot I have seen can still be beaten by legit players. Although, I bet there is sometype of super secret bot that only jp with short haircuts have T_T.

A bot is a character that is being controlled by a third-party script. The script can either read the game's memory space or pixel colors on the screen and react accordingly (like voke Behemoth or hit enter when something snags your fishing line).

ffxi may actually be trying to stop botting now but the botting world just got more advanced as well

i won't disclose the website i found on it but pm me if you want it

some new program was developed for botting and it reads directly from the ffxi servers

no clue how it works but many people seem awfully excited about it

That's called Packet Sniffing.

Basically you have another computer set up to read network transmissions while you watch the game on the other PC. For example, you could notice that every time you catch a fish, a particular HEX pattern is sent to you from the server.

Eventually you can script the packet sniffer to do stuff when certain patterns arrive from the server.

Hard to stop, unless they keep cycling the network code.

So i'm guessing by those descriptions, it's not possible to "bot" from PS2? Man, we get robbed on everything (PS2 users).

2. You all can change almost every aspect of display of the game, and certain items in game. (I.E. moggles in mog house)

lildog wtf are you talking about about being robbed of everything. You can bot on ps2, ever heard of a turbo controller? it can work the same way as a bot, spamming provoke until you claim closest mob. ( I'm not condoning botting, just giving an example) Also did you know that mobs do show up on PS2 much sooner than on PC?

packet sniffing can be made harder if they use encryption on the packets but again if you have a copy of the game you would have the cyper to decode it, its an endless circle but if SE can patch like once every 2-4 weeks 1 file that changes the codes it would mean the software is a bitch to keep up with, till they begin then reading directly from ffxi for the cypers etc... god why do programmers have to get so smart

Anyhow all you can do is be annoing and change the software against that particular method of botting, at the end of the day it costs too much to try and keep up on the botters all we can hope for is that we can beat them in those split seconds on the vokes....

I think stopping a power provoke bot will be close to impossible.
There are too many sophisticated bots out there, that are more in depth then people think, some to most will function as if there was really a person behind the keyboard. Mouse clicks and movements, keyboard input emulation is what most bots are based on, and that, will be hard to stop, since its outside the game. SE has no control whatsoever of what runs on the background of FFXI.
