srsly, what if the internet died? what if one morining you woke up and the internet was gone.

what kind of reaction do you think we would get world wide? not so much the older people but from this generation on teenagers and pre-teens?

ive been thinking about this all day and the only thing i can come up with are suicides and village burnings.

The economy would completely crash. Most businesses would go bankrupt in a week. Apple would go out of business. Microsoft would remain but would be downsized incredibly to just home office software, but would retain a monopoly as open source software projects would be obliterated. Unemployment would reach heights unseen since the depression. Many would commit suicide. People would adapt eventually though. More mom and pop shops would start appearing since chains would go bankrupt. Agrarian living would become more popular.

Movie and book industry would see a huge boost. Local bands and music trends would stay the same for a short while, but begin to decline without the network communities once provided.

That's all I care to imagine for now.

if the internet exploded, every computer connected would explode, because thats essentially what the internet is. worldwide fires and panic. It would be very difficult to do though, some disaster on a worldwide scale like nuclear winter.

The Internet is just a model of communication. I could never in my lifetime explain the exact physics behind it, but it uses copper wiring and fiber optics to transmit pulses of electricity or light respecitvely between servers, networking equipment, PCs, and more. Networking equipment uses protocols to route the information, error check, repackage the information, or more depending on what kind of hardware your talking about. The "Internet" isn't so much a physical thing as it is a conceptual term for the monster we've created.

Originally the Internet was conceived by the US Department of Defense as ARPANET for a way for scientists to communicate with each other, but since expanded commercially.

Just go to wikipedia if your really curious.

Theirs a couple of "backbone" servers, That are spread around the world. That you kinda could say is the internet. Usuaully they are pretty big and handle a fuck ton of requests and what not. If you took one or 2 down you would slow down the internet a bit.

Doesn't really matter because we'd have no way of knowing what the rest of the world was doing anyway lol.

To add a few more possible consequences in; I'm sure there are countries who have missile defence systems tied to the internet in some way such as if they stop receiving a signal from the capital they go into automatic launch mode against predetermined targets. Satellites in orbit would likely be out of control. I'd most likely read non stop, I decided last year that I would read all of Charles Dicken's books by the time I'm 25 and since then I've read "A Tale of Two Cities" and that's it.

Without the internet life would feel like we've gone back to the Dark Ages again, especially as if the internet is gone then most likely the infrastructure a lot of it runs through (phone lines) is gone too.

While I agree that a lot of companies would suffer immensely in the short term, as many thing rely on internet communication, the idea that everyone will be cut off from society is a bit bleak.

I remember life without the internet. There was national and international news. People read magazines to keep on top of trends, and listened to the radio to keep up with new music. If the internet went down, there are still telephones and satellites. There is TV and newspaper. There are planes, trains, and automobiles, the backbones of our ability to transport goods into our overpopulated cities.

Eventually people would remember how they did things 10-20 years ago and re-adjust accordinly. The 80's were hardly the dark ages ^^.

Edit: Rein and Karta, what's on your to read list? My favorite used bookstore is moving and having a half off sale so I'm going to try to stock up on some stuff that I wouldn't buy normally :D

This is a highly unlikely scenario.

There are plenty of servers to cross-reference and adjust accordingly.

Thinking of it analogy wise, The internet is a lot like UPS or the US postal service. There are a shit ton of individual branches within each entity that keep day to day business operations up and going even if one branch goes out. It'd be a feat to say the least to take the entire chain out of existence.

The same line of thought can be applied to "the net"

However I think in the movie "Escape from LA" or may it was "new York" there was a satelite device that was aimed at shooting a worldwide EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) bomb onto the Earth to take out every single electronic device in existence (down to a casio watch) and keep it out forever as long as the satelite functioned. It would probably take such a device or at least a similar one to stop the internet but of course many other things would cease to function as well.

So you wouldn't have dark ages without the net, but you would have the 80's and the 80's sucked lol.

And Chana, a good book is Memnoch the Devil by Anne Rice, although I'm not really into all the vampire crap and bizarre shit a friend of mine told me to read it and it was a very interesting read.

yeah to think that we would all go back to slaying dragons and writing on walls is just silly.. like mentioned, wed still have multiple forms of communication, so were all good. maybe america would lose some weight you know? actualy go outside and do things, i know that if i didnt have the internet id longboard all day and read...

and i went over 8 months last year when i was grounded w/o the internet and after the first 3 months i started to adapt..

the books on my list are all by chuck palnuhnuk or something.. if i could find the book id spell it right but he wrote the original fight club, lullaby, invisible monsters and some otehr really good books..

only one ive read so far is invisible monsters, and it is the ONLY book i have actualy read, and even when i say that, i cant say it truthfuly because i have not finnished it, and i refuse to... i was to attached to the story, and so in to the book, that i dont want it to end, seriousley you guys, i effing hate reading, but this guy is a genius. i think i have like 2 chapters to go and im never going to finnish the book because i dont want the story to end.. going to read fight club next.

I'm not sure how specialized networking hardware is, but I doubt we still use old phone swithing equipment. Most telecom equipment I imagine is intergrated, kinda like getting internet access from cable, so if you took down the internet telecommunications, like many phone services, would dissappear.

I still think an incredible chain reaction of catastrophe would occur if the internet up and "dissappeared" overnight. Not saying we'd all turn into backwoods farmers, but society would change and adapt.

There is quite a bit of redundancy in networks and I would be surprised if there wasn't in the case of the internet itself. Multiple paths to destinations and if one route is shut off the traffic can be routed to take another path through different hops. Lots of sites have mirrors also. Really would be almost totally impossible to take down the internet at this point.

hmm matrix, I, Robot, lawnmower man etc.

good point,

should machines come up with such an advanced AI and actually infiltrate the internet then humans may encounter difficulty.

Yet again I read some short story by some guy I went to school with that proved a counter-point to machines turning on their human creators

In it, humans argued that they "feel" when they are killed and of course machines validly argued the same point. Then one of the central characters (a human) of the story argued, "then build a machine that doesn't feel."
He was right, sure the advanced machines were intelligent enough to comprehend that something like a car or a toaster just operated and thus held no intellect much less emotion. Damn that was a good story lol.
