Well...
After a 13hour drive, we touched down in Shreveport (north louisana) We've stayed at a hotel ever since. Tuesday we are moving into an apartment.
Today my dad helped me finiance a new laptop, I have 3 years to pay him back(with interest)
So here I am, leeching hotel internet for the next 2 days. Trying to figure out what I'm going to do now.
and
What can I say, everything that I’ve known and loved for 20 years is gone.
My house is underwater (lived in lakeview, where the levees broke), and my beautiful cats are dead (trying so hard not to think about them).
But..I’m safe, but everything that made me happy is gone.
I know that I am one of the lucky ones.

My birthday is in 6 days. 21.
and I doubt I’ll ever see anything that resembles a friend or my lover or a familiar place again.
But I won’t cry.
Because I am lucky.

Image
that was my home, the water is now up to the roof.

Apparently I've survived....

I evacuated with my two cats, my mom, and my rabbit. We're in BR right now, and I'm working out of a law firm, moving the 200+ person office into a 50~ person office.

West bank survived the flooding for the most part, but we got looters, a tornado down my street, and yay they burned our mall down.

I've been incredibly lucky through the ordeal, as I plan to return this week to a home that may still exist, and get my personable items that may still exist. About 70% of my classmates, as well as my school has been flooded out. I'll probably never see many of them again.

geez mintsy sorry to hear that from what has happen but I live in Southern California and work for U.S Xpress.

I just hual shipment of bottle water from Niagra as Katrina disaster relief and pulled 20 trailer all day today and VERY Heavy load as well each tailer was taking 1,034 pcs and weight is 54,234 lbs now that almost 10,000 over the 80,000 gross limit counting my truck and empty trailer which is uselly at no more than 46,000 lbs for the load itself.

So goverment waved over 10,000 lbs load and hours of service limits and I been driving from 2am in morning until 7pm, Thats 17 hours of work and driving time and we are only by law to do this at 14 hours of work and driving. Anyhow I did my part to help those ppl that needed those food and water. I had pickup the load from Ontario,Ca and taken to Los Angeles,Ca Union Pacific Rail where our 53' trailer will be loaded on those train and taken to Ms and La.

Well I will be still pulling those load for rest of the week until there no more needed and may god be with you and those people thats trying to get back to their lives again. :(

As you go through today, as you would on any normal day, try to take a moment to sit and think about this time last year. Try to imagine what it would feel like to lose everything, and to not even know for weeks how bad it was. Try to imagine not knowing if your friends and family are alive. Try to imagine what it would feel like to have toxic water rising all around you, as you watch the few things that you own go under. What would you do? How would you handle that? Would you still be handling it the same after a week? Try to imagine your neighborhood completely destroyed…for miles around you. What happened to your neighbors? Are they still alive? Try to imagine this whole time not knowing what is going on or what you should be doing. 90% of most foreign aid was received faster than aid to a city in our own country. Canadian Mounties got into the city to help before our own guard did.
A year later and hardly any of the promises Bush made have been kept. People are still missing, dead are still occasionally being found. Families are still torn apart and friendships have been lost.

And today, on the anniversary of the biggest failure of the federal government in US history…. The best the news media can do is report after report on Karr. Seriously wtf.
I feel like I live in one of the best cities in the US, but now it is the city of the forgotten, any day now we will be sinking into the sea...and no one will care.

I'm sure your kitties are ok Minsty. Animals have a nack for survival and even if they hate taking baths, cats will swim like a torpedo if they need to hehe. As for your house im really sorry but just remember that memories arnt in material goods. They are in the people we keep around us and inside ourselves. The only way you can lose something dear to you is to give up on it or forget it. Hope everything works out ^^;

Obviously you've never thrown a cat in a lake or pool, they swim hella fast to get out of it!

Mint......I feel for you as alot of people dont honestly know the drain that this Hurricane has caused on us and everyone here. I dont know if Iam gonna stay in this area. Very hard to trust the local politicians here that allow chit to go un-inspected or the unwillingness to work with the Federal Government. Before the Federal Government releases money, they want to know that its being used for purposes to help the area instead of filling up politicians pockets. Ive read your post recently, though the Federal Government (Army Corp of Engineers) is to blame initially, my firm belief is that the blame falls all the way down to the local government and the SCHMOES that are elected. I know theres politics everywhere that has a backend deal to fill their pockets....but having politicians with no regard for the safety of its people unless their pockets are full is totally unacceptable. I totally wish all of yall could read the local newspaper here and the evidence of corruption they find out about our "Wonderful" politicians. The USA Today doesnt print these articles so iam assuming no other one does also. Politicians taking FEMA vehicles that were supposed to used for emergency reasons..are being used for personal ones. I could write for days the chit that happens here. Alot of people are frustrated about the Federal Government, but someone has to make sure that the local govenment here is not gonna piss away the contracts and money that the Federal Government wants to send. Did you know that supposedly all the Levees (hundreds of miles) were always inspected...but was done in under 5 hours. Copies of e-mails from the Newspaper here showed more concern from the people inspecting our levees to make LUNCH appointments at a specific time than to make sure a FULL PROPER INSPECTION was being done. If proper inspections were done year in and year out, wouldnt these imperfections have been found? According to numerous engineers from universities, its unimaginable how some levees were not spotted as needing repair or upgrades. But once again...............LUNCH IS MORE IMPORTANT along with FILLING those pockets. What about the local government having yearly drills to make sure all areas of emergency prepareness are on the same page? Please...nothing like that was done here yall. We have a DOUCHE-BAG as a Governor and a Mayor whos more concerned with throwing the blame everywhere else besides himself.

ALL LEVELS of GOVERNMENT is to blame but also THE FOKING DIPSHITS THAT VOTE THE IDIOTS INTO THE LOCAL GOVENMENT ALSO NEEDS TO TAKE BLAME.

So New Orleans still has the infamously corrupt public officials it once had? That's a shame :( It's pretty surreal thinking that an entire city could be destroyed. I can't really picture it very well

Discovery Channel has been showing areas that got hit unlike CNN. I live in Metairie which is on the outskirts of New Orleans. From the big Levee failure at the 17th street canal, I live about 5 miles from it. I remember riding or jogging on the levees before the storm and its quite obvious from just seeing the levees that they needed to be upgraded, but once again.....the term "what can you do for me?" always comes first before anything else. Iam glad as with alot of people here that the Federal Government is playing hard ball with the local government here.

I just started at Loyola this year.

If A: another cane hits
B: I find a university with a better setup for my major.
C: I generally stop liking my school/the city.

I'm gone.
