The government reported Thursday that 4.4 percent of baby boomers ages 50 to 59 indicated that they had used illicit drugs in the past month. It marks the third consecutive yearly increase recorded for that age group by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

Meanwhile, illicit drug use among young teens went down for the third consecutive year — from 11.6 percent in 2002 to 9.9 percent in 2005.

The annual survey on drug use and health involves interviews of about 67,500 people. It provides an important snapshot of how many Americans drink, smoke and use drugs such as marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine.

Drug use by baby boomers increased from 2.7 percent in 2002 to 4.4 percent last year. Marijuana was by far their drug of choice, Murray said.

I'm failing to see how this is crazy. 4.4% is a very small percentage.

Yes, it is a small percentage, but I'm surprised that this landed in the news...and the fact that this percentage has been rising for the past three years is particularly interesting to me.

Statistically every person will get into a motor vehicle crash in their life. So statistically you're going to crash your motorcycle, and since people get killed all of the time in motorcycle crashes, you are going to die. My best friends parents smoke weed, and I'm 99% sure they do coke... my thoughts on it are...... cool. Lol

My parents are baby boomers. A couple months ago I got caught while I was high and my parents decided to have a little chat with me. Unfortunately, they tried to give me this talk after they had had a few drinks, which was nothing short of hilarious. One of the interesting tid bits that my dad let slip was that he smoked pot for twelve years. He is now a hardcore runner and runs marathons every few months. Oh, and both he and my mom smoked cigarettes starting at fourteen, and quit when they were in mid to late thirties.

Ok, first of all, I'm sure the percentages are much larger than that. Second of all, I think the percentage in the news is only growing because smoking weed is becoming a little more accepted as our society realizes that conservative government is BS(ok, Partisan politics is BS, in general) and more and more of us are joining a more balanced type of ideal. Don't get me wrong, I don't think doing drugs and crap is cool, in fact, I think it's a ridiculous waste of money and time(...but, really so is sitting and playing a mmorpg for 8 hours a day...)Many people are escapists and cope with life by using recreational drugs, playing addictive video games, running marathons, etc.
