MUMBAI (Reuters) - U.S. heavy metal band Slayer's latest album has been recalled from music stores across India after the country's small Christian community said the cover depicting Christ with amputated arms and a missing eye was insulting.

Christian groups said the album -- "Christ Illusion" -- did not only have an offensive image on its cover, but some of the songs such as "Skeleton Christ" and "Jihad" hurt the sensibilities of Christians and Muslims alike.

"We took strong exception to the album which is offensive and in very bad taste," said Joseph Dias of Mumbai's Catholic Secular Forum.

The protests prompted EMI Music, Slayer's Indian-based label, to pull the album from all music stores and its depots.

"Last week we recalled all the albums and destroyed them as we did not want any community to be hurt," said T. Suresh, the company general manager.

In May, Christians, who make up about two per cent of Hindu-majority India's one-billion plus population, protested against the screening of "The Da Vinci Code", and forced its producers, Sony Pictures, to add a disclaimer saying the movie was a work of fiction.

so not only did they recall the albums, but they destroyed them because they "did not want the community to be hurt." How about letting the marketplace dictate if the community wants the album or not? If the "community" is really so angry about the album, it won't sell.

It's sad that there are still places in this world where artistic freedom is not allowed.

What's the world population at now? 6.6 Billion? (got that off some site lol)

I found it hard to believe that India actually accounts for 1/6th of the population in the world...

However, this here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population
proved me wrong. >:O

I mean, fuck, really, I thought US had some people in it, but damn, shows how undereducated I've become. Asia and China aren't surprising at all, but the others were.

Looking at how huge the US is in comparison to those other places gives the realization of just how many people they are packing into a country. Seriously? Wow, haha.

Kinda like what Mid-West did with the Beatles albums after Lennon said they were bigger than Jesus. Only that was a bit more unintentional than this. You'd think Slayer's label would have the sense to not keep the same cover art for a region that's conflicted as much as the Middle East and the surrounding areas like India. It'd suck to see the band's safety compromised over something as trivial as album art.

China accounts for almost a fourth. Talk about one cluttered continent.

you see, christians think god is watching. they think god is expecting them to react this way, and that probably god is clapping in heaven right now.

no offense but the india christians i've met seem less tolerant about freedom of expression than american christians. i could be wrong but it seems that way.

by the way the new slayer album rules. i'd say its on par with any of their best albums.

personally I think naming a track Jihad is just asking for trouble, never mind depicting Christ being mutilated (oh wait, what happens when you're crucified again?)
