Arrest Made After 'Suspicious Packages' Paralyzed Boston as Part of Cartoon Network Marketing Campaign
Wednesday, January 31, 2007

BOSTON — More than 10 blinking electronic devices planted at bridges and other spots in Boston threw a scare into the city in what turned out to be a publicity campaign for a late-night cable cartoon. The devices depict a character making an obscene gesture.

Boston police said Wednesday night that one person had been arrested, and authorities scheduled a news conference later in the evening to provide details.

Highways, bridges and a section of the Charles River were shut down and bomb squads were sent in before authorities declared the devices were harmless.

"It's a hoax — and it's not funny," said Gov. Deval Patrick, who said he will speak to the state's attorney general "about what recourse we may have."

Turner Broadcasting, a division of Time Warner Inc. and parent of Cartoon Network, said the devices were part of a promotion for the TV show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," a surreal series about a talking milkshake, a box of fries and a meatball.

"They have been in place for two to three weeks in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, Austin, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. Parent company Turner Broadcasting is in contact with local and federal law enforcement on the exact locations of the billboards. We regret that they were mistakenly thought to pose any danger."

well, it definately is illegal to just post random things on streets, because you need permits and such, even if you own the property where it is to be displayed (on the outside). someone is goin to get fired no doubt.

That kind of publicity won't fire anyone...really, and if it does it's sad, that person for their guerilla marketing efforts if fired will only live in infamy and get a higher paying job later in life.

Remember, this little terrorism scare was never on the behalf of the network, as you can see the "light brite" sign was harmless, people fear what they don't understand, what's funny is how citizens and law enforcement perceived it and what is more important is what it turned out to be.

The social implications of this in America is actually kind of scarey. The fact that anything blinking, a left bookbag, etc. is now perceived to be an explosive device, that troubles me. More often than not a "left backpack" at a train station is a "left backpack." Do we really live in this much fear now? wow.

That shit made national headlines and it's being talked about all over today, that kind of marketing is priceless. It's not like Cartoon Network planned this kind of strategy in their "think-tank" sessions lol...or, maybe they did, those young creative geniuses.

That and from a psychological standpoint, Cartoon Network may even get more younger and more loyal audience because of the controversy. Anything controversial in a young teenage mindset is often perceived as cool, or rebellious so kids will eat it up. It'll be lunchroom and possibly even classroom (current events) conversation for like the next few days.

You can not buy that kind of free press. It's as golden as a Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction, only better because really Cartoon Network and Aqua Teen had little to do with this marketing campaign. Sure people will view it as bad but in all reality this is the best marketing/press possible. Aqua Teen is gonna be a household name as well as cartoon network for the next week and a half or longer.

The batteries that powered the light brights were thought to be explosives.. that is so awesome. Yeah they shouldn't be fired I guess, but they might get some kind of heat over fines levied against CN. In the US in this day and age.. anything suspected of being a bomb is taken seriously. It should be as we are a prime target for terrorist groups more now than ever. That doesn't mean we shouldn't live our lives though.

Gotta love americans (I am one and sad of it). Freaking idiots. Yeah im sure the evil Iraians are gonna put neon lights on their bombs! Just goes to show, if you didnt pay for the ability to put up anything you cant, but if you do give the city money then you can put up ads to encourage young kids to smoke themselves to death! I love capitalism!

They cleary erred on the side of extreme caution. Someone could have easily told them that those same "devices" were planted in other major US cities for over a week. Hell, those Mooninites in Boston had been there a week before those asshats called in a bomb threat to the authorities. Hard to believe there wasn't at least one person on Boston's police force that could recognize those characters from ATHF. That they couldn't discern that it was 4 D batteries powering a light bright is more troubling.

Its not like this was used in 10 cities before coming to Boston. Only thing they have to stand on legally is that they didn't get permission for posting these.

The press conference was brilliant. Plus ATHF couldn't ask for better publicity.

24: Aqua Teen Hunger Force

Aqua Teen Hunger Force has planted LED Lite Brite bombs and the only man that can stop them is Jack Bauer.

I thought about this some more, if it was common knowledge that fake bombs were being planted around cities, and I just happened to be a terrorist, would there not be a better time to plant my own bomb, as everyone who saw it would look and think "lol, thats that cartoon network thing" until it detonates.

So in conclusion, the whole thing was dumb

Also, the cheif executive of cartoon network has been forced to resign and their parent company is paying the local authorites $2 million as compensation for it. The two guys who planted the devices might still be charged, and the best thing is, the viewing figures for the cartoon havent improved at all lol

The cartoon happens to be brillant lol. Its pretty damn funny IMO. It may look like shit, but if your baseing that on the actual value of the show then there isn't a reason for me to continure.

All those adult swim made shows follow the same traditional hanna barbarra legacy that they've been known for. Script first then animation. Its a formula that actually works.

I think honestly Cities like boston, overexagerated. Granted yes Cartoon Network ( turner broadcasting) should have have gotten permission from each city to do this. But it also goes to show how ignorant people are, the world we live in now lol.

What a mess.

It's lazily written and animated. South Park has a "poor quality" aesthetic and is still a high quality show.

Jim Samples, CEO of Cartoon Network, has resigned over the bomb scare prompted by the Aqua Teen marketing campaign. Turner (CN's parent company) ended up paying over 2 million in restitution to the city of Boston, and a man with a thirteen year record at the company has lost his job. Though many people have been citing this as 'the ultimate successful advertising campaign', there have obviously been real consequences from the incident
