Since when do rappers sing. I'll pay you 20 bucks to freestyle 10 bars. You can teach a monkey to beat a drum, but you cant teach that same monkey to make a poem off the top.

Rap is like any other genre: there's some good and some bad. But the ratio of "even half decent" to "horrendous" is especially lopsided.

folk music also has this same stigma

you're either great or just another kid on the front lawn with a guitar that I wanna smash like John Belushi did to that guy in Animal House.

I'm a huge fan of old school rap. I don't like much of the new stuff at all. The new Nas album "Hip Hop is Dead" is the best new stuff I've heard in a long time.

I liked enter the wu-tang. 36 chambers of death.

Honestly I have no idea what the actual name of the album is but it was pretty sturdy.

That is quite possibly the best rap/hip hop album ever made. All of the older Wu-Tang stuff is legendary.

Then make hiphop more melodic again with lyrics that are actually clever and in some way significant but not cliche

Well I used to listen to the Ghetto Boys lol. Not all MCs are freestylers, and very few are any good at it at all. Ludacris is funny sometimes, same goes for several other MCs. My problem now is everyone bragging about how rich they are, bling, etc. Was cool the first 500 times I heard someone talk about their material posessions, nvm it never was cool lol. Oh and bragging about how good you are as a MC or how cool your beats are is quite lame as well. I actually find the fuck bitches, deal drugs, shoot people gangsta rap to be more humorous. That got old pretty fast too. The political stances in most rap/hip-hop I hear are pretty stupid to be honest.... the same goes for almost all music though.

Battles can be entertaining, but on a whole it breaks down to your moma jokes. I have heard enough of those to last a lifetime. Anything else.... oh yeah call the other person gay or make fun of their house or clothes. Well it gets pretty original sometimes, but rap battles rarely have music that is played live by actual musicians.

Which leads to my other problem with rap/hip-hop is that the majority of the artists rely on DJs/sampling and drum machines. I would rather see actual musicians on stage that can improvise with the vocalist (MC). If a MC is to be considered musically talented they have to at least hit pitches that are in key with the music. Monotone vocals are the suck and this goes for any music (death metal included of course, just because something is distorted doesn't mean its not in key). I do realize some hip-hop artists actually have a band. And no you can't teach a monkey to time signature changes and do fills on drums.. that is just ignorant. Maybe you could teach a monkey simple ass dance beats that are repetitive as hell. Programming a drum machine isn't the same as performing drums in a precise manner along with other musicians.... I can't even respect it at all.

Dance music in general is utter shit and appeals to the masses. Dance music is only any good for me to go to a club and try to pick up on stupid drunk bitches. Since I no longer go for that kind of activity (clubs), I don't listen to dance music. Most rap/hip-hop is chorus and hook oriented, which also is tiresome.

hip hop is not my style but as long as an artist isn't catering to the conformist brain, i cheer you on. so /cheer to you.
