So these little buggers are going to take over Chicago in the millions. I walked by one tree and it was covered! They dont bite nor fly very well but its interesting they stay buried for 17 years before coming out. Can't wait to ride my bike through a swarm of these guys 8)

"The billions of periodical cicadas of Brood XIII are expected to launch their invasion of northern Illinois and parts of Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana this week

Cicadas—insects that spend most of their lives as nymphs, burrowed underground and sucking sap from tree roots—emerge once every 17 years. Living fast and dying young, the shrimp-size, red-eyed insects transform into adults, reproduce, and die, all the while buzzing to beat the band."

Yeah weird lol I remember these being all over Phoenix metro AZ when I was a kid (I always stuck their shells to my shirt). I haven't seen/heard one here in probably 10 years.

Gah. We had a bunch of these a few years ago. I freaking hate going outside when they're here. They're so loud when they land in your hair and get stuck.

actually those are hum lyrics a fairly well know chicago (urbana/champange) based band. when i used to frequent their messageboard some urbana resident said those lyrics always stood out to her because of the way the cicadas gather all over the trees in the summer time. yay for being random but not really. I figured computer would've gotten it... prolly no one else

Its kinda like a Chicago thing. I was told the noise they make is for mating. Just another way to confirm summer is really here.

Another way to tell is spiders take over :?

One of these things is loud enough, I can't imagine the noise a brood (lol) would make.

I used to run over these things with my bike when I was a kid, there was so many of them in the streets. Oversized grasshopper/roach type insects.
