My friend is having an error installing FFXI for the PC, we've been at this for well over 12 hours and it has still yet to work on his PC.
We've waited through all the tedious updating and such, and everything from Tetra Master to Rise of Zilart has been installed. (He dosnt have CoP as of yet)
We get as far as the part where you click "Play" but instead of bringing up the connecting to server, followed by the "Create Character" screen, it goes black and then shows this error:
"Terminated as error occured in Final Fantasy XI. Failed to recognize Hardware TnL. Please check that this computer has the required specifiations to run Final Fantasy XI. (-1)"
Someone make it stop
The specs on his PC are:
Windows XP
Intel Pentium 4 Processor
248MB RAM
21.6 GIG free space
Just got the NVIDIA XP/2K GeForceFX Graphic Card

Basically, It all seems like it should be working properly, It meets all the requirements labeled right there in black and white and I cant understand whats wrong, If anyone knows what could be wrong and how to fix it please respond ASAP, I'd like to hope he didnt just waste all that money for something that his PC wont run.

This is the error message DirectX spews out if it can't activate the high-end 3D stuff on the card. Anything above a GeForce 2 should have Hardware TnL.

Chances are it's a driver issue, since you've already stated the card is a GeForce FX (5). The card could be running on the "legacy" drivers built into Windows XP, which really don't work properly.

Goto http://www.nvidia.com/ and grab the latest Forceware drivers.

If that doesn't work goto http://www.microsoft.com/directx/ and make sure you're running the latest DirectX (I've known upgrading drivers without updating DirectX too -- if there is an update -- to cause problems.)

the nvidia link wont work, server problem.
And its already running DirectX9, so the problem must be the Drivers, correct?
Can you think of any other ways to fix this? I've been awake for going on 3 days now and this is EXTREMELY frustrating.

Yeah, the nvidia site is playing up.

I did a quick google for the drivers, try this: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=854

And if it doesn't fix it, then try redownloading DirectX anyway, I've had it fix things in the past.

What chipset is the motherboard using?

redownloaded DirectX and still no dice, im downloading the Forceware as we speak so let us hope this works so I can get some sleep and you all can meet Zuee, the newest Mithra to Ifrit server (this is my friend who needed the help installing)

Um, I dont know computers or anything and you probably already did this, but you have to turn off Norton Anti-virus and all other spyware programs before installing.

I play on PS2 now but

lmao, problem solved, we took the PC version back and Zuee got a full refund on it, and got the PS2 version...had it up and running in about 4 hours instead of 3 days {All Right!}

when i got my PS2 version it was from a guy from work and it had been used. it seemed to have given the Same error thing so we read into it (well yarr did mainly i just questions alot) and yarr fixed by reformating the HD in there and we reinstalled it all.
