Explain to me why I love Porcupine Tree?

I'd only heard a little bit of their stuff, but just got ahold of Deadwing, In Absentia and Fear of a Blank Planet and I love it.

I blame you because you recommended them, now I demand an explanation.

That is all.

Yay!

You love it because it's sophisticated, textured, yet unpretentious rock music that shifts in and out of so many sub genres that it can't be defined. Also the production values are absolutely astounding.

At least that's why I love it

That's because you're thinking it's more heavy handed than it is.

http://myspace.com/porcupinetree

Listen to "Blackest Eyes" to get an idea of what they were doing around 2001-2002. There's a heaviness there but also a lot of very nice ambience and harmonies

And this is from 2005--I just found a bit of the studio recording set to this guy's horrible and stupid photography

So it's not like some Estradasphere type shit where one minute they think they're neoclassical and the next minute they think they're country western. It's specific but it's not easily comparable.

Porcupine Tree is pretty good stuff. I haven't listened to them in forever though.

In Absentia, Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet are the three albums most people focus on but they've also got an extensive history of albums, B-sides, rare recording and the like. I also recommend Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream. I'm absolutely in love with the frontman Steven Wilson. He's more or less my favorite person in existence.

He could have renamed it "porcupine tree". It wasn't a personal message like most PM threads are

Some of this is alright, but some of it just makes my head explode thinking it sounds like a mix of oasis and coldplay.

But what do I know? I'm listening to the goddamn Phantom of the Opera soundtrack at 5:40 am. The way you described this band I had expected something more along the lines (though obviously very different, since you said "rock") from Garbage, who I do like. That's probably why I was let down a bit.

Colbert looks like Tony Almeida in that gif.

i can't get into the vocals.
and the instrument music just doesn't make up for the vocals.

It's nothing like oasis or coldplay

That is so much more ambitious musically than oasis or coldplay rofl. Good musicianship and really good vocals (depends on if you can stand brits singing). I have heard them before, and they are a good band. DT could use a vocalist like that imo, sometimes I want to punch LaBrie in the neck.

I can't see DT with another vocalist besides Labrie. lol I'm not saying I think he's the best vocalist in the world, especially considering he has a lot of out-of-tune off nights live, (no really James, the C doesn't belong in the Amaj9 A C# E G# B chord, I promise.) I sure as hell hated Chris Collins and Charlie Dominici haha

And I don't really think this is a completely useless topic, (unless you're saying it's useless because I addressed it to Ponuh specifically, har har,) considering more than just he and I are responding.

There are plenty of useless topics on this board actually.

The time I saw DT live was like 10 years ago, but LaBrie was alright and not singing flat (guess I caught him on a good night). I sure as hell could see them having another vocalist. They don't have to be stuck with one style of vocals with the music they play, and its not like LaBrie is always singing totally hair metal either.

Really I find guys that aren't as technically talented as far as vocal ranges go, like power metal singers less offfensive due to how they aren't as dominant in the mix. LaBrie is given too much space and comes off as a cheeseball in music that has no place being cheesy. I would like them to have more understated vocals actually. The other band members carry that band anyways.

I saw these guys in Philly a couple months ago. They were ok. But nothing to write home about. I enjoyed the live show much more than their recordings though. Good musicians.

You should also check out the Fear of a Blank Planet B-Sides that were released today. The collection is called Nil Recurring and it's absolutely fucking fantastic. PT cuts really good material often because Steven Wilson is one of those musicians who is concerned with the shape and unity of the album. The cuts are all spectacular songs (including an instrumental) and Fear of a Blank Planet is now an even better album with the songs added back in. It's $8.50 for an MP3 download at the porcupine tree store.
