Ok.. so I'm on my way to school.. pretty close to downtown Cincinnati, OH. I get off the highway and stop at the light. There's a guy standing on the corner. Looks to be about my age (21). He has a dog with him. And he's holding a sign: "Please help me out. Thrown out with no place no to go and no money. Need dog food, supplies. Anything helps. God bless." Not to mention it's about 40 degrees in Cincy right now, and he had no coat. Just a sweatshirt. I could see him shivering. And his hands and nose were bright red. So I think for a minute... and roll down my window and give him five dollars. Light turns green and I drive off. And then I started crying and thinking about how I should have given him the blanket in my car and my coat and my unopened lemonade I had just bought. And the bottle of vitamins in my purse. And omg, I feel horrible that I didn't give him everything I had. And I'm seriously contemplating going back right now and giving it all to him. Anyway... he said 'thank you so much and god bless you'. And the tears just started flowing... That's so sad. And it's Christmas. Hmm.... I don't know why I posted this but I just feel like... I don't know... maybe... talking about it helps? Thoughts? Comments? Someone cheer me up. Or I'm going to bawl all through calculus review.

Giving them money isn't going to help them one bit. If they are so damn broke then go get a job making pizza or something. I hear people crying about how they dont have jobs and need money and every store i go to there is a sign "Help Wanted" "Managers Needed". There is a problem with our government just giving everyone handouts and OMFG, it's going nowhere. I drive by these city projects each day and all these people are on government handouts.

Sorry to post this but
"Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, feed him his entire life."

Next time you see a bum, throw a book at him. Next bum i see is getting Mgmt 404 right in the teeth

*EDIT*
another dumb quote i found
"In sixty-seconds I can teach him how to catch a celery."

boners.com, eh.

Anyways, most people on the corner do that for a living. I hear some of them make like 30-50 grand a year doing it. It's mostly an act. If it's not, then they're drug abusers and your money will go to drugs and alcohol.

It sounds heartless, but they're very good at making someone give money.

you know, alot of the people on the streets have learning disabilities, so i seriously doubt they are going to find any Managment position, at best they can only do minimum wage physical labor, and because of our economy all those positions are held by imigrants like Mikey.

well every homeless person just like the rest of us have a story. ppl become homeless for many different reasons. not everyone is uneducated, druggie, or lazy. it is possible that he got thrown out very very recently and had absolutely nothing and was in the process of getting a steady income. i have been homeless before, i was living in an apt and the ppl were going home for x-mas then a few days later the landlord comes by going "wtf i thought everyone moved out >.>" apparently they decided they were going to leave the apt and never told me, and i wasnt on the lease so the landlord was shocked as hell to find someone there still. they were all planning on moving out in a month so they had moved stuff already so i wasnt thinking anything of it. well push comes to shove i had 5 days to find a place for my stuff.. which didnt happen.... which the landlord threw all my stuff except some of my clothes that i had with me in a friends car to the curb. later that day people were telling me "oh shit that was your stuff people were carrying down the street" yea i then moved into my new home for about a month or so, a restaurant some like to call "Denny's™" (because friends worked the night shift and let me sleep in a booth). during this time i got a job at a restaurant in the mall waiting tables... made money... got back on my feet. but if it wasnt for Denny's and friends i would be that guy minus the dog :| so i guess before you judge a book, try reading a few pages to see a piece of its story. this wasnt a flame, this was just to see what the other side of the coin may look like ^^

I've never been kicked to the curb (yet >.>) but I'm still in college and I can easily see how it could happen... apartment mix-up, can't pay rent, parents kick you out, some other random catastrophe. Milamber, don't feel bad, you still did more than lots of other people passing that person, I'm sure they appreciated your help. Xiona was at least lucky enough to have friends to help out, a lot more than that guy obviously did. :?

I would go to the next Walgreens i saw and get a freakin job. They will hire anyone, and all you have to is work a min. of 32 hr a week to get benifits. If you work 5 days a week normal hours (plus all the overtime and PM's) thats more then enough to pay the bills. How do i know this you may ask.... because thats what im doing now. A simple job (Which starting wage is alot more the minimum wage) pays my car, school, medical, etc.... Again throw a finance or money management book at them, its the best thing you can do for them.

Right, which would be a fantastic system if they had one thing. A permanent address. You can not file taxes without one, you can not sign up for benefits without one, and it is part of the process for validation of legal availability to work. So yeah, just go get a job. Why did no one think about that before?

ok ok you got me there. I somehow turned this from a homeless thing to a poor thing (not that homeless aren't poor). Although, I was surprised to see the bum i tossed my Econ book to at the bank making a deposit from the large ammounts of pitty change he collected.

=D>

*edit*
This thread is just an outlet for how mad i am at my school for making me run Red Hat 8.0. Every time i go to VI a file to enable ftp the GUI crashes. ](*,)

Also some of you might think all homeless people wear their underwear outside their clothing. In reality its only about 87.21458 % who do that

Well, regardless of whether they're really poor/homeless or not, passing them by while I sit in my nice warm car just doesn't sit right with me. I think I'm going to make little bags full of food, toothpaste and toothbrushes, vitamins and gift certificates to restuarants and keep them in my car. Whenever I see someone on the streets, I'm going to give them one. It's not a lot but at least it's something. Maybe they'll feel like someone in the world cares about them :|
