Here's a look into what I'm studying right now.

I recently got an assignment to read a short paragraph and answer some questions.

うえのえきは このみちの もうすこし さきにあります。 このへんには おおきいビル も おおきいみせ も たくさんありますが, パークビルはありません。 うえのえき の さきは とうきょうえきです。 うえのえき と とうきょうえき の あいだ は ほとんどみせ と ビルです。  うえのえき の まえ にも とうきょうえき の まえ にも ひとつずつ こうばん が あります。

What it translates to:
Ueno Station is a little further than this street. In this area there are many big buildings and big stores, but there are no park buildings. Ahead of Ueno Station is Tokyo Station. Inbetween Ueno Station and Tokyo Station there are mostly stores and buildings. In front of Ueno Station and Tokyo Station there is one police box.

and then i had to answer some questions to it. If anyone here is interested in some independant studying/refresher, i could post more of my previous assignments up and let you guys work them too

EDIT: Here's a break down.

Vocab:
Eki = station
micha = street
kono micha = this street
mise = store
Biru (in katakana) = building
Pa-ku biru (in katakana) = park building
Kouban = police box
ookii = big
aida = inbetween
takusan = many
hotondo = mostly, almost (can be used with negative though, like hotondo wakarimasen for 'doesnt understand too well', though i dont think most japanese would use hotondo like that)

Phrase Breakdown:
sentence 1
mou sukoshi saki ni arimasu = a little bit further ahead.
mou means again or more,
sukoshi means a little,
saki means ahead

sentence 2
kono hen ni wa ookii biru mo ookii mise mo takusan arimasu
In this area there are many big buildings and big stores
kono hen = this area
hen means area or vacinity

ill finish later and try to explain the particles used here more, mainly mo and no, and ga and wa

start by learning basic things like, masu forms of words, negative present tense, positive present tense, negative past tense, positive past tense EX: Wakarimasu (understand), wakarimasen (doesnt understand), wakarimasen deshita (did not understand), and wakarimashita (did understand).

practice learning those, then learn other principles like 'te' form of words and 'temo' form, and then learn te + n desu sentence structures etc.

like Mimasu = to see
te form is misette, useful for like asking to see something "sore o misette kudasai" >> can i see that

EDIT:
learning your hiragana first can help you in starting, especially with pronounciation etc. your next step is learning sentence structures, and learning vocab so you can switch out words in those sentence structures to form different sentences. once you get the hang of those and get some vocab down, learn more complex sentence structures. maybe i can suggest a book for you or something, i dunno if any of mine are too great though
