I don't think its really against the rules tal, it doesn't really affect people who play the game really, since they can't see anything anyways.

technically speaking changing around any system files in FFXI is a ToS violation. however, something like that wont get you in trouble. Its not going to matter.

as the bad example...

Editing .dat files to remove mobs like say.... Darters who hang around Fafnirs lair to give yourself an unfair advantage when it comes to trying to camp fafnir is cheating.

I heard of that Darter "trick" quite some time ago, it's been around a while. It stops the mobs being rendered (including their name) so you can't target them with /targetnpc and you can just spam voke all day.

I wouldn't be surprised if some people in KFC actually do it, it'd be pretty easy to keep it secret. Since it's a strictly client-side change.

Wouldnt swapping .dat files for camping be a form of exploiting? Even though you CAN do it doesnt mean you should.

KFC probably uses this in conjunction with like 20 full powered bots.

Yeah its a classic file hacking exploite type thing. Basically giving the person who does it an unfair advantage over the honest players. Id murder anyone in my ls I found doing this.

Yeah editing .dat files for something like that is totally lame and I would consider that an exploit of the worst kind.

On the other side of the spectrum playing around with .dat files to change your characters look or messing with the game music, though technically against the ToS, is just something for personal use and doesn't affect other players so I don't see anything wrong with that.
