As the subject of this post implies, my RL time has just been hijacked by something that isn't, shockingly enough, FFXI.
My life has been stolen once again by that greatest of my passions, the one thing that somehow always manages to transcend all other diversions in my life...
Reading novels.
On a trip into the B. Dalton bookstore in one of the local malls, under the pretense of purchasing a copy of The Salmon of Doubt by Douglas Adams, I stumbled, quite accidentally, across not one, but two equally surprising things.
Much to my inital delight, and now to what is a mixture of both joy and dismay, I was surprised to find that two of my favourite authors had released new books in hardcover, neither of which was I aware had been published.
Shadow of the Giant by Orson Scott Card, was the first that I came across, just as I entered the store. I knew this book was coming, but I had no idea that it was even near release... I know, shame on me for not keeping up with the times.
Seeing Destroyer by C.J. Cherryh on the next shelf was what truly shocked me, though. Here was a new book by one of my most revered authors, in a series that I had not once, but TWICE thought she had closed. Of course, in hindsight, I should have known better... If any of you happen to be readers of this magnificent series, you'll understand why I think myself a fool for ever believing that the series would end on such an infelicitous number as 6. Not when the perfect 9, the triad of triads, awaits.
Though my life won't remain hijacked for long. Novels, no matter how long they may be, no matter how long-winded and verbose, never last very long in my presence.
The curse of the fast reader. The joy always ends far, far too soon.
