Square Enix welcoming back retired FFXI players
Final Fantasy XI players with canceled PlayOnline accounts can return with their old characters and up to a month of free play.

TOKYO--Gamers who have deleted their Japanese PlayOnline accounts and want to return to Final Fantasy XI may be able to make comebacks. Square Enix announced today that it will launch a "Welcome Back Campaign" for FFXI from April 14 to July 13 in Japan. Retired FFXI players that sign up on the game's official site during this period will be able to get their PlayOnline and FFXI registration codes reissued by Square Enix, meaning they can return to the game with their old characters intact instead of having to start again from scratch. What's more, they'll also be able to play the game for free for 30 days.

This Welcome Back Campaign will only apply to FFXI gamers who have already canceled their PlayOnline accounts. Retired FFXI players who still have active accounts at PlayOnline will have the chance to get their deleted characters resurrected when Square Enix begins another campaign in June. Accounts that were banned by Square Enix due to misbehavior are not eligible for the Welcome Back Campaign.

SE is jes scared because everyone left for WoW and lineage2, so they did this to attract players back

So if they can restore the characters now.... what the hell was stopping them from restoring accounts like Thunderstomp's before? That's kind of bullshit haha.

Yeah its funny that they would say "im sorry there is no way to revive your character or something like that" and now they are like "if you want to come back it doesnt matter how long youve been gone!"

this does upset me... what about all the ppl that did quit and came back? TS and Rakeen have worked pretty darn hard to get where they are/were, then SE pulls this S??T...

they need to give the players that have been playing this game for a while some incentive to stay, like creating a NA server or two... or a free month...

I fall in the category of cancelled all my content ID's, but not my POL account. Basically, if I want to I can still message anyone on my friends list and read any replys. I have not done that since November.

Somehow it was comforting to not have the option to return. Just avoid all temptation. When phase 2 starts, if I can reactivate my character without any cost, I probably will do so. Of course, I'll never play day in day out like I once did and I'll cancel again as soon as I have to pay. But, I wouldn't mind logging in and chatting with some of my old friends.

I doubt I'd do much of anything with my character. I gave away pretty much all of his gear. Fighting in AF gear probably won't cut it and there's no way I'm farming the cash needed again.
