GameStop/EB Merger Approved by FTC

New company will likely dominate used game sales

GameStop Corp. and Electronics Boutique Holdings announced today that their merger has been green-lighted by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976 apparently expired on Wednesday, June 8, 2005. The merger is still pending approval by each company's stockholders, though that is unlikely to be any sort of road block in the proceedings.

"We were a bit surprised that the FTC did not take any action to review the proposed merger," stated Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities. "While EB and GME each represent approximately 10 - 15% of the overall market for video game products in the U.S., we note that the two companies are dominant in used video game sales, with effectively the entire market for used video game products sold in brick and mortar stores."

The combining of the two video game retailers should close in the third quarter of 2005.

Intresting, i wonder if this will change the overall look of the stores.

I work at EBgames, and as far as i was told is that more than likely everything is going to be Gamestop, thats gonna piss alot of people that are loyal eb customers, because from some of the people that shop at my store most of em dont really like gamestop, just because of the people work there. so i dont know how it will work. it probably would be good for everyone envolved that everything stays the same but everything under the gamestop unbrella. thats my two cents.

I work at Gamestop and customers that come in and say they either love or hate gamestop or EB for stupid reasons like their one bad experience or one bad sale just pisses me off. I used to shop at the EB near my house until I got the job and there were some cool people there, just because I don't shop there doesn't mean they suck. Anyway, my boss has been saying that some EB stores may most likely remain the same, unless a store's layout is too different to accomadate to gamestop's plans. I've been to other stores gamestop had acquired (software etc., babbages, planetx.) and they mostly look and are named like what they used to. It's just that pretty much any store opening after the merger planned by either gamestop or EB will be named gamestop. Regardless, it's gonna be pretty cool, if I can get a discount at EB as well, can go shopping for harder to find games elsewhere.

i wan wondering what was going on because there is a game stop and an EB right across from eacheother in the arizona chandler mall. and jes recently the EB one closed down and moved out w/o warning. i was wondering what was going on
