I know there are still a lot of people who haven't done this quest, for you people maybe this thread will make you think twice about it and go get it done...
I got my NPC after waiting in line for about 4 hours in ghelsba, I tried it out a bit in gustaberg but it disappeared after 5 minutes and i was kinda "bleh" about it. But I noticed my NPC was now wearing Lizard armor which felt kinda cool.
Next two days I tried the same thing, hoping I could make it level and/or lengthen the time the NPC will stay around to help you. It didn't really work so well but i got a little exp so meh. The whole disappearing after 15 mobs was a big deal at level 5. But my NPC had upgraded to even better armor and that was still as cool as it was before.
At the Rondevouz Point I went to talk to my NPC and noticed it now gave me to option to talk about jobs. I excitedly switched to Healer and then realised I gotta wait til tomorrow to use my pearl again, bleh.
Well today I decided I wanted to cap all my combat skills so i could have a pretty blue window. I needed to cap axe so i jumped onto 37 WAR/NIN and grabed 2 axes and was about to go outside. I thought, hey, this would be an awesome chance to really use/level my NPC.
So I went outside, buffed with Utsusemi and a leftover Tavnazian Taco, and used my pearl to call Nanako. Within 5 seconds of being summoned, Nanako cast Protect II on me, that was pretty cool already.
So normally when just skilling up I'd stick to EPs, but knowing I had help and there was also going to be a restriction on how many mobs i could kill, i went to find a low DC. I engaged the mob (it was a Goobbue) and got to work. First thing Nanako did before engaging was cast Dia on the mob, neat.
Few swings into the fight later (my axe is really badly underlevelled, so this fight was taking a while) Nanako started to cast a few more spells. First she casted Slow (Woah) then followed shortly afterwards Paralyze (Awesome!) both of which stuck fine even though she was 7 levels below me.
A popular hobby for Goobbues is to use Uppercut/Beatdown right when you lose your shadows. This one did and I got hit for a hefty 250 damage. Few seconds after that Nanako cast Cure III on me pretty much healing me back up. Now considering I wasn't really enjoying my NPC much before, things were certainly looking up.
I got another battle in before she gave me a warning that she was low on MP. I can't really see how much MP she has, so I figured I'd just rest a minute and hope it fills her up. A little while later she told me her MP was full and she was ready to go, handy. As I stood back up she cast Stoneskin and Blink on herself too, nifty.
Next I pulled a Quadav, which just happened to be an RDM type. My shadows got eaten fast by Diaga, and the Quadav managed to cast Paralyze on me, bummer. But once again my NPC truely amazed me when it cast Paralyna on me about 5 seconds later and removed it! That's when I really fell in love with it, lol.
The NPC started out looking worthless and a waste of time after waiting in all those lines but SE actually managed to pull something decent off. I was really impressed with this "Healer" type NPC, from removing poisonga from me, followed by themselves, to casting Protect/Shell buffs on both of us. All at the same time they were still using Red Lotus Blade and Fast Blade, and at one point we even did Fusion SC.
Bravo.
I'm interested in hearing how "Attacker" NPC is, I could check myself but I'm liking Healer NPC way too much. I've been given the option to switch the weapon my NPC uses now, I've not decided which I want them to use yet. I mean Great Axe would be fun (yes, she's allowed to use Great Axe even though she's a healer) but they're not gonna get many swings in while they're casting magic, lol.
