The earth was probably just a rock forming when it was hit by a comet (speculation) that added just the right elements to create water on earth.
Science is fun since what was fact yesterday may be a laughing joke next week.
that's actually a pretty stable theory because the moon is supposedly hardened mantle. if a comet hit the earth it would have left a large crater spewing mantle into the atmosphere/space and it began revolving and it formed the moon.
