So I recently decided to spend an a sizable sum on a new desktop PC.

Currently I'm leaning towards several products, and was curious if any one had any opinions on the over all set up. Plus if anyone is envious thats a plus. And if I stupidly got picked something thats not compatible you can laugh at me.

Thats the big 4. 5200 processor, lanparty motherboard, 4 gigs of ram, and a video card thats probably overkill for the processor, but I didn't want an SLI setup.

I'll prolly get a 80 gig WD raptor, and 120 gig WD caviar for Hardrives, a cheap ass sound card ( or reuse my Creative soundblaster one from god knows how long ago). Plus a Dvd/CD-r combo drive, a 650W power supply, and a couple minor things like some case fans and a spare keyboard.

ditch the AM2 and get a Core 2 Duo, they kick AMD's processors out of the water, and go w/ the ASUS P5N Deluxe board (or somethin like that). and just make sure that the PSU u get is a good one, cuz the 8800GTX takes some major power

Yeah 8800 GTX uses 4 molex connectors with an adaptor (basically the power to 4 HDs lol). 1k power supply would never hurt, but you can get by with 650. Intel is better than ATI at the moment.

IMO everything looks good. That monitor is very nice, and that video card is a fucking beast. I've heard nothing but good about 10,000 rpm western digital raptor drives (I know a couple people with them irl). That PC with that monitor will be very nice for gaming.

I plan on building a new PC myself sometime this year. I don't know if I'll go with AMD or Intel. I've never owned an AMD PC...my current is an Intel P4.

My opinion to you is to wait and get more money, you're getting mid grade (tech wise) stuff that will become yesterdays news soon. Let me explain a little and compare a bit. I have had my share of AMD vs INTEL computers and specially now, intel is putting out better chips. They are also more tweakable and runs a little hotter, but it shouldn't be a big deal with a well vented case. I recently built a friend of mine a very nice computer. The New EVGA motherboard (122-CK-NF68-A1 [the revised version of the 122-CK-NF68-AR]) is a kickass board with the right hardware. The memory used was the Corsair Dominator (DDR2 1142), video card was the BFGR88768GTXOCE which is compatible with your card, processor was a Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz, on board SC, 2 250gig WD (WD2500KS) and last but not least the case, XCLIO A380BK.

I OC'ed CPU speed, FSB, Mem Speed, Video Card Speed (GPU/RAM).
Everything has worked flawlesly and all under 50 degrees (heavy load).
After Market fans for everything (incluiding HD & Mem), added 2 extra 80mm case fans (one in the back and one close to memory).

Was expensive, but he had the money to do it, and he's happy with it.

CPU

At first I was told to go AMD, but then a friend who plays FFXI recommended Intel. Said it was cheaper, runs just as good and actually has an auto-off feature if it gets too hot, which is definitely something I want.

That particular one is a Intel Pentium D 935 Presler 3.2GHz 2 x 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor Dual-Core

Definitely think I want to go Dual-Core as I actually run 2-3 FFXI instances sometimes and want to have FFXI on one monitor and WoW on the other.

I don't know much about a lot of this stuff, just basics but I am split between two Mobos... Both Asus, though, and I want to try Asus as I think as my last was an MSI.

This one, though, if you read the reviews, says their might be a problem with the CPU and this mother board and something bout Flash Bios.

WTF Flash Bios? ANyone want to eloborate on what the person is saying the problem might be and if I should try this one or not?

This one is a bit better that the lower of the same model. If I send in the rebate, it's actually cheaper.

Can anyone honestly say if this is too much or not? I mean, the entire purpose of the computer is to be a gaming computer with great perfermance on most games, imaging, rendering, etc... I don't want to half ass it, but I don't know where to draw the line @ too much or not enough.

Bios stand for Basic Input Output System, it has a firmware that does the POST (Power On Self Test) on your computer and starts the booting process, it holds basic information about certain hardware and it detects certain hardware (such as CPU, Memory, Drives & etc...). Flashing the bios is pretty much replacing it or "updating it", now days it can be easily done by most manufacturer's proprietary drivers & software's. Just make sure when you are flashing your bios, you don't touch the power/reset switches and hope the electricity or your PSU doesnt go out on ya.

As far as the system goes, it looks okay. It's a nice system if you have to go with a cheaper alternative. Certainly i wouldn't want that processor for a few reasons, mainly because it's one of the hottest made by intel thus far, it also has high voltage req., doesn't support some of the newer instructions like EM64T & SSE4, and it has no warranty. You could easily OC that cpu i posted above and have it run cooler.
The motherboard is okay i guess, i'm not a fan of asus (ever since i had major problems with it randomly shutting off on me every so oftan), i really like abit and gigabyte and but again, i don't know how asus has been lately.
Memory is fine for that specific setup and so is the video card. I wouldn't put much faith in the PSU, but that's also just my advice one it. Case also seems to be good, with the right flow of air; you won't need watercooling (unless your room is a sauna already)

It looks good overall though, it should play most recent games on full, but you might run into some puzzles with that cpu. =]

Now, for motherboards, I HAVE been noticing a lot of negativity about Asus.

For that CPU I listed, what woul dyou go with? There is one Asus I am thinking of trying, it's a better one, but I need to know things like flashing the Bios and what RAM will work in it. Stuff I'd have to research before making mroe purchases...

Is there one you might suggest? I did want to go Asus as I was not fond of my last mobo and I think it was MSI. However, I am honestly not sure if it was so I will not rule out MSI brand. hell, it mighta been an Asus itself. :p

Aaand Edit: To post something more on topic, speaking of new hardware/technology coming out, are the Flash Hard Drives coming out practical or what? I know less moving parts=longer life, but I know they can still die. Also what would the read/seek times on these things be? For some reason I remember you could load an OS from a flash drive really quick like.
