My physics is rusty, and I was terrible at it, so chances are i'm wrong, but as far as I know...
It's called
Archery for a reason. You're not supposed to fire on a horrizontal plane. You're supposed to fire upwards in an arc. As the arrow falls on it's verticle axis it will gain velocity. Acceleration in each axis are independant of each other, so this won't effect it's horizontal axis, thus it's velocity will be greater over time.
You're right, objects can not accelerate by themselves. One of the laws of motion. But it's not accelerating by itself, gravity is a force acting upon it.
Actually, Kaylia is right..... objects won't accelerate bythemselves.
The point at which the projectile is travelling the fastest is at the time it leaves weapon. (unless you are shooting downwards, ONLY if you shoot at any angle below horizon, will the object gain acceleration with gravity).
Shooting "upwards" at an arc like you mention, Ket, does not speed up the projectile at all, b/c the amount of speed lost in going up (objects will slow DOWN due to gravity also) is equivalent to the amount of speed gained coming back down to the same lvl. Arcing the arrow only allows it to travel a farther distance, not move faster.
